From One Mother To Another - How To Make A Baby Shower About More Than Just Baby Bunches

By Caroline Miller

If you're pregnant or have kids, chances are you've attended a baby shower complete with gifts for Mommy and favors for guests. A lot of the stuff that the mother will receive will no doubt be useful as she sets out on the most important journey of her life. Elaborate gift baskets will contain all essentials for baby while a baby bunch will contain a selection of clothes that will be more than enough for baby's first few days.

But in all the excitement pre delivery and the gift giving and receiving frenzy, what the new mother might really need is tons of useful well meaning advice. After all, a bunch of baby clothes is not going to be of much use at midnight when she's trying to get her angel to go to sleep, or when she cries incessantly and Mommy's beside herself trying to figure out what's wrong.

Let's face it. Parenting books and magazines will do only so much in helping you make it through those difficult initial months. Most so called experts you can bet haven't even been near a baby with colic.

The "Mommy knows best" adage is as true today as it ever has been, and who knows better than all her friends, and mothers who've already had their children. As far as giving the new mommy advice goes, these friends have the collective wisdom and experience of a dozen experts. If you're planning on a shower for your sister or friend, why not use it as an occasion to give Mommy some useful tips to use for all the myriad challenges that she will face in the months ahead?

Giving advice doesn't have to be as boring as it sounds. Create an Advice Journal and divide it by sections. For instance you might have one section that's devoted to colic, another to breastfeeding issues, and you might have smaller sections for advice on how to deal with rashes, hiccups, and other mundane things that are so frightening for a new mother.

Use your handy cam to create a special DVD for the new mother. Ask friends and family members to chip in with their nuggets of wisdom.

Ask guests to write down their favorite Mommy disaster moments on a postcard. Collect all cards, throw in a festive basket and hand over to Mommy.

These are just a few ways to turn your shower into an enriching experience for Mommy, and to make the shower about more than candle favors and bunches of baby clothes.
