Breastpumping Information and Tips

By Amy Comstock

One topic new moms always have questions about is breastfeeding and pumping. I strictly pump for my newborn and also did so with my 3 year old who was a preemie, so I thought I would give some info & tips on how I do it.

First, you need a good pump. I use the backpack version of the Medela Advanced Pump in Style breastpump. I bought mine from BestBuyBaby.com for $225.00. Great pump. Shelling out a couple hundred for a good pump, in the end, is much cheaper than the few thousand you would spend on formula; and remember, breastmilk is a thousand times better for your baby than formula.

Next, you need to set up a schedule. It's very important you stick to the schedule and pump at approximately the same time every day. You should pump every 3 to 4 hours for at least 15 to 20 minutes. I pump about 25 to 30 minutes each time, except for the first pump of the day. That's closer to 45 minutes, just because I'm fuller from not pumping during the night and want to make sure they are emptied. Emptying your breasts fully at each pumping session will help you increase and maintain your milk supply. My pumping schedule is set up as follows:

The first pump time is whenever my son wakes up. Today it was 8am.

#2 is at 11am. This session is 3 to 4 hours after the first pump, no later than 11am though.
#3 is at 3pm. This session time does not vary.
#4 is at 6pm. This session time does not vary.
#5 is at 8:30pm. This session time does not vary.
#6 is at 11pm. This session time does not vary.

Note: my son eats 6 times a day, but if your baby eats during the night, you will need to pump then too. Basically, pump every time your baby eats, which should be every 3 to 4 hours. In order to get my son to sleep through the night, I feed him consistently every 3 to 4 hours during the day according to my schedule above and then let him go after his 11pm feeding. Each week, as he gets older, he sleeps a little bit longer. He's now 10 weeks and slept 8 hours straight last night.

I pump and feed my son at the same time, except for the 3pm session when he eats at 2pm. At that feeding, I eat lunch and feed him at the same time. When I pump and feed him at the same time, I put him in his LeapFrog Magic Moments Learning seat and sit on the floor in front of him. Works well.

The bottles I use are Dr. Brown's standard bottles. My review is here. They are supposed to reduce spit up and gas. My son currently averages 4 - 5 ounces at each feeding. Here's some general guidelines as to what amount to put in the bottle:

Age: avg amount per feeding:

1-2 wks: 2-3 oz
3-4 wks: 3-4 oz
1-2 mths: 4-5 oz
2-3 mths: 5-6 oz
3-4 mths: 6-7 oz
4-7 mths: 7-8 oz
7-9 mths: 7-8 oz
9-12 mths: 7-8 oz

The batch of milk he gets at each feeding is as follows:

AT THIS FEEDING : HE GETS THIS BATCH:

#1 at 8am : #1 at 8am from the previous day
#2 at 11am : #1 at 8am from today
#3 at 2pm : #2 at 11am
#4 at 6pm : #3 at 2pm
#5 at 8:30pm : #4 at 6pm
#6 at 11pm : #5 at 8:30pm

Note: My #6 at 11pm batch gets dumped so I can eat half a garlic clove at 9:30pm to keep me from getting too run down. Garlic works wonders. Unfortunately it gives my son a lot of gas.

My son is very sensitive to what I eat, so this schedule makes it a little easier to track down what foods I may need to avoid. This post gives more info on what foods to avoid when breastfeeding. My supply has been amazing so far, so whatever is left after I fill his bottle gets frozen.

Some tips to maximize your supply:

1. The hardest is try to get plenty of rest.

2. Pump at the same time every day. If your supply starts to decrease, add another pumping session.

3. Drink plenty of water. I drink a ton : 1-2 glasses every time I pump, 1-2 glasses at each meal/snack. I probably drink about 20 glasses pf water a day. I keep my water pitcher at room temperature. It's easier to drink the water when it's not cold. Water is good for, has no calories and keeps you healthy.

4. Get plenty to eat. I eat 6 times a day and try to eat as healthy as I can despite having to temporarily cut out some vegetables, fruit and milk due to my son's sensitivity.

5. Massage your breasts while you pump. That helps make sure all the milk gets out, which prevents clogged ducts that can lead to mastitis.

Mum's Diet When Breastfeeding

By Tina Rychlik

During pregnancy it is important to be cautious about certain foods as the growing baby can not handle i.e. bacteria that can be found in unpasteurised milk products or alcohol. In contrast, breastfeeding does not require as much attention to one's diet as pregnancy; however, it is still necessary to keep an eye on the diet in order to feed the baby safely. Luckily, the human body is designed to make the best of what it gets. Even if a diet is deficient, studies carried out all over the world have shown that breast milk still has the right combination of nutrients in order to feed the baby effectively. If the mother's diet is poor the body's own stores of nutrients will replace what is lacking in the milk - for as long as the stores allow it.

However, for mother's and baby's sake it is important to eat healthily. A broad dietary variety is also beneficial in that babies experience different taste and smell of breast milk. It helps develop the taste buds and may also help to create the foundation for cultural preference in cuisine. This explains why a baby nursed on a bland diet may push away a bowl of curried food for instance. Studies have shown that mother's preference in food during pregnancy and breast feeding does affect the baby's palate in the same way.

On the other hand, a number of mothers have confirmed that there may also be some foods with an adverse effect on baby's health. They find that their babies get gassy after eating cabbage, Brussels sprouts, broccoli, onions or cauliflower. This view has not been scientifically proven. In addition, some babies may even show allergic reactions to the mother's diet, most commonly dairy products. There may also be more accounts of reactions; so every breast feeding mother has to find out what her baby can swallow easily and what not. It takes between 2 and 6 hours from the time a certain food was eaten until it affects the taste and odour of the milk. Thus, if baby shows signs of discomfort while digesting the milk it is worth eliminating the suspected food for a few days and to observe whether it makes any difference in the baby's symptoms.

What foods best to avoid

Nursing mothers should limit their alcoholic intake as much as possible. Ideally, they should drink no alcohol at all because it can be detected in the milk, though considerably less than what was drunk.

Caffeine in coffee and theine in tea should be kept to no more than a cup or two a day. If you drink too much it may affect your baby too. It should be noted that caffeine can not be passed through their bodies as efficiently as adults can and it may actually build up in their systems. It is worth considering caffeine-free alternatives while breastfeeding.

If a history of food allergies is known in the family, peanuts are best avoided. The consumption of peanuts has shown to leave traces of allergens in the breast milk and can add to baby's risk of developing allergies in later life.

Try to avoid processed foods that show long lists of additives. So-called e-numbers do affect the mother's and the baby's health and should be avoided at all times. However, some e-numbers have natural origins and are allowed (visit The Soil Association for more information)

It is important to keep the amount of fish to no more than 340g (12oz) per week in order to minimize the exposure to mercury. In addition, the FSA advises to limit canned tuna to 280g (drained) and fresh tuna to 170g per week.

Lastly, sweetener known as saccharin should be consumed very carefully because long-term effects are yet unknown. The better option is sucralose (Splenda) which offers a safe calorie-free sugar substitute.

How Best To Bond With Baby

By Tina Rychlik

Baby bonding is a way of creating and enforcing the intense attachment between yourself and your baby which lasts a lifetime, enabling you to love and protect your child.

Our bodies are programmed to bond with our new baby sooner or later: research has shown whilst pregnant and during birth both mother and father are flooded with hormones which help bonding. Oxytocin is released during birth (the same hormone released at the point of orgasm) creating the feeling of euphoria, this hormone is also thought to be involved in the formation of trust between two people.

The first few hours are of course very important in the relationship between mother/father and baby but in no way do they determine the pattern of your future relationship. The bonding process is not timed and depends upon spending time together, building trust and getting to know your child. There is so much discussion about bonding with a new baby that parents often feel guilty if they don't feel some incredible attachment to their new baby immediately. This can be a factor in post-natal depression. There are many reasons why people may have difficulty in bonding with their babies:

• It is a sad fact that 1 in 8 babies in the UK are born prematurely or sick; this can leave parents feeling very detached and helpless. Neonatal care experts believe that physically caring for their new baby - although sometimes difficult in a hospital environment - makes parents more relaxed and confident about parenting and enables the bonding process

• Relationship worries

• Financial worries

• Death of someone close

• Difficulty breastfeeding

• Unexpected or traumatic pregnancy, difficult birth

• Crying colicky baby

• Parents who have experienced abuse or neglect in their own childhood often wonder how they can love their own baby

The most important thing is not to feel guilty about not bonding with your baby straight away. Many new parents feel an "emptiness" when first seeing or handling their newborn. Removing the pressure to bond is the first step towards building a relationship.

Fathers may feel worse especially if the baby is being exclusively breastfed. This removes a lot of opportunity for them to spend one on one time with their baby. Bathing, dressing and early morning play before leaving for work may be the only chances they get to bond with their child. After all the initial expectations fathers may have to resign to the fact that - at least for the first few months - a breastfed baby's desire is boobie and boobie alone.

Every parent with a sincere desire to bond with their child will eventually find their own unique way of doing so. The best way to get started is to listen to your natural instincts; research has shown that parents who rely on their instincts master their new found role very well: they are able to recognize their baby's signals and to respond to them. In addition to this there are many different techniques to encourage your bond with your baby:

- Relax with your baby. Try to get as much sleep as somehow possible. Forget household chores, if possible enlist help from your partner, family and friends. Being stressed out and tired certainly does not help the bonding process.

- Everyone wants to come round and see the new baby, however by limiting the number of visitors in the first few weeks this gives you the chance to relax, get in to a routine and get to know your new baby.

- When out and about carrying your baby in a sling will help you feel closer as well as keeping your hands free to get on with the shopping etc.

- Try and communicate a lot with your baby, through the eyes, skin contact, singing, talking, etc.

- Have lots of cuddles

- Play with your baby: mothers and fathers tend to specialise in different types of contact. The "mother role" is likely to involve more talking and quiet interaction; the "father role" tends to involve playfulness and "physical rough-housing".

- Write a journal of "letters" to your baby: let him know how you feel and how your feelings may change or what you think when you see him.

The Hottest Trends in Baby Names and Their Meanings

By Benedict Manovill

You see them. You hear them. They are here among us. What are they? They are the hottest trends in baby names and their meanings. And today we are going to look at 3 of the hottest trends.

Baby girl names and baby boy names are filled with life. Baby names change from year to year. Just a few decades from now, baby names may be so different, we may think we are on another planet. Who knows - by 2060, people may have songs for names.

Trends in baby names are different from fads. Fads are here today and gone tomorrow. Trends, on the other hand, are lasting changes. They may go on for years or even forever.

Stay with me now, because we are about to look at 3 trends in baby names that are going like gangbusters.

The "Br" Trend - First names beginning with the letters "Br" are very popular right now. It is difficult to say when this trend began. Some "Br" names such as Brendon hit the popularity charts back in the 1960s. Others, such as Bridget, got a big boost in the 1970s.

Here are some names that are hitting it big in the 21st Century:

For boys - Braydon (English) meaning "Broad valley;" Brent (Norse) which means "Sword;" and Brett (English) meaning "Man from Brittany."

For girls - Brianna (English) meaning "Noble;" Brittany (English) which means "Brittany" (in northern France); and Brooke (English) meaning "Stream."

The "Aidan" Trend - Right now, parents are naming their babies names that rhyme with "Aidan." Usually, these are 2 syllable names such as Jaden, Caden, and Hayden.

Here are a few good ones:

For boys - Aiden (Gaelic) meaning "Firey;" Braydon (English) meaning "Broad valley;" and Caden (German) which comes from the place name "Kaden."

For girls - Hayden (English) meaning "Valley of hay;" Payton (English) which means "Pacca's town;" and Raven (English) meaning "Raven" (black bird).

The Place Name Trend - This trend came up upon us slowly and suddenly it was here. More and more parents, including movie stars, are naming their children after places. Names such as Brooklyn, Heaven, Asia, and China are becoming familiar to us as persons. For the moment, more baby girls are receiving these names than baby boys.

Here are several beloved names:

For boys - Preston (English) which means "Priest's town;" Ross (Welsh) means "Moor;" and Skye (Gaelic) meaning "Isle of Skye."

For girls - Asia (Greek) meaning "Land of the rising sun;" Jordan (Hebrew) meaning "Jordan River;" and Lindsey (English) which is an area in Lincolnshire, England.

I hope you had fun reading this article about the hottest trends in baby names and their meanings.

There is a huge variety of infant and baby clothing online, and you can find just about any saying or sentiment you can imagine, or even create your own. The possibilities are endless if you shop online and ordering the perfect baby onesie is a simple and convenient process.

Some of the more popular baby clothing items are ones that relate to the parents occupation, ones with funny sayings, and ones geared for siblings. These types of baby clothes are cute, have a special meaning for parents, and make a statement. If you are looking for onesies, bibs, and other baby items that are personalized, all you have to do is sit down at your computer.

Shopping for baby clothes is fun, and if you are expecting a new arrival or have a young child looking at all the possibilities online is an enjoyable experience. Many parents enjoy shopping for baby clothes when they are expecting and shopping online will open up a whole world of clothing possibilities. A popular style of t-shirts and onesies for infants are ones with "when I grow up" sayings. These types of shirts make great gifts and have cute sayings that relate to a parents occupation. You can find many different types of "when I grow up" sayings for just about every occupation if you look online. Some parents may love a onesie that says "expert pooper," and others may find some sayings like this offensive. If in doubt, you can always find an online retailer with a good selection and purchase a gift certificate so that your recipient can select the baby clothes that appeal to them.

How To Survive A Week With An Active Toddler

By Barb Desmarais

Over the years I've worked with hundreds of parents of toddlers. It's probably the most labor intensive stage of the child rearing years. Toddlers are busy little people that require constant supervision. Here are 5 tips to help you survive your week with an active toddler.

1. Examine your expectations. Toddlers want to be around their parents all the time and have no sense of how demanding they are. They're simply acting their age. Don't expect to get a lot of paper work or housework done when you're toddler is awake and playing. Save it for when they are asleep.

2. Toddlers are curious about everything around them and have a need to explore. If there are things you don't want them to touch, keep them out of reach. This is a very brief time in the life of a child so don't think you're going to be living in a bare room forever. It eliminates a lot of "Don't touch!!" or "No!!"

3. Don't expect toddlers to patiently wait for a meal time. It's better to feed them small amounts of food frequently. What's important is what they're eating. If they end up eating their dinner before you intended, that's OK. A hungry toddler is not fun to be around. If they won't sit and eat with the family, don't worry about it for now. They will.

4. Restaurants and malls are not for toddlers. If you want to shop in a mall or go out to a restaurant, do it when you can leave your toddler at home. As best you can, stick to places that are baby friendly. It's easier on everyone.

5. Accept that this is a very demanding time both physically and emotionally. Make sure you take time out for yourself to re-charge. Make a regular date with your partner or with your friends. Participate in something that is adult oriented. When you do, you'll feel renewed and refreshed and have more patience with your active toddler.

Have Fun Decorating Your Baby's Room

By Angel Delacruz

You've just had a baby! And as a brand new mom, you find that there are a whole new set of tasks and duties thrust upon you now that you have a little one to take care of. One of the very first tasks that you have to accomplish is preparing a nursery for your baby.

Now, if you are the kind of person who loves decorating, you'll find that preparing a nursery is a piece of cake. But if you're the kind of person that doesn't have too much creativity and has a hard time piecing together designs and decor for a room, then decorating your baby's room will prove to be challenging. Of course, if you can afford to hire an interior designer to design your baby's room, that would take the task off your hands. But if you want to be a part of the decorating process and you want to add a personal mother's touch to your baby's room, there are guidelines that you can follow to make it easier for you.

First of all, keep it simple. It doesn't have to be overly decorated, just enough to keep it pretty and functional. Set up a room that will grow with your baby. Keep in mind that as your baby grows, his/her needs will change, as will the room. Eventually, you'll need spaces for books and toys and other things your baby will require. Creating a room that will grow with your baby will save you money and effort in the long run.

Other things to keep in mind: it's better to use neutral colors so as to make it gender-neutral. Earth tones, yellow, green, and other vibrant colors will look good. Sometimes, it's great to have a lovely painting in the ceiling, like balloons, stars, or the sky. Your little one will be mesmerized by it. Also, buy furniture pieces that are durable so you won't have to dispose it as time goes by. It can even last until the teenage years of your baby.

If you want to decorate or change something in the room, without having to spend too much money, you can add items like colorful curtains, or maybe paint the walls with something cheerful, just anything that doesn't really require money but can add something fun to the room. For beddings, you can get some nice, affordable ones if you know where to find them. Beddings are usually capable of changing the look and the mood of a room entirely. So have fun with that.

Decorating your baby's room is actually a fun experience. And as a mom, it's your chance to get hands-on and create this new small world for your baby. So enjoy it!

Feeding the Baby

By Kiya Sama

1. If bottle-feeding, always write the time and date that you opened the container of the liquid formula (ready-to-feed or concentrate) on the can. Most formula should be used only up to 48 hours after opening (except for power form). This is especially important when baby first comes home and is on a demand feeding schedule.

2. Stand wobbly baby bottles in a soft drink carton. That way they don't topple over in the refrigerator.

3. Highlight the ounce markers on baby's bottle with nail polish or a waterproof marker. You should be able to read them in a dimly lit room and know if baby's at "burping time" and has consumed the usual amount for a feeding.

4. Regulate flow through the nipple by tightening the bottle collar for a slower flow and loosening the collar for a faster flow. Remember that too fast a flow might make some babies gulp their liquids and result in too many uncomfortable air bubbles in their small tummies.

5. Enlarge the holes in baby bottles if you boil them for about five minutes, and then allow to cool for about three minutes with toothpicks lodge in the holes. Or use a sterilized needle to enlarge the holes. If the opening is too large, just reboil the nipple and it will close up.

6. If you store bottle nipples in a cool, dry place, they will last longer.

7. An occasional brushing with salt solution prevents baby bottle nipples from deteriorating.

8. Whether or not you should heat baby's bottle in the microwave open is controversial. Some say that you should never warm the bottle in a microwave; the formula may be too hot, even though the bottle itself is cool to the touch. Also excessive heat destroys vitamins.

9. An old-fashioned yet safe way to heat a bottle is to put it in a pan or bowl and run hot tap water over it until the temperature is just right.

10. Whatever way you heat a bottle, always shake the bottle after heating to mix well, and make it a habit to always test a few drops on the inside of your wrist to feel the temperature just before feeding baby.

11. Some parents like to keep an extra formula in the refrigerator to add to a too-warm bottle. You can also cool a too-hot bottle by placing it in a pan and running cold water over it for about 45 second; then retest.

12. A baby fed in as upright a position as possible is less likely to suffer from trapped air bubbles. This position enables that stubborn bubble at the bottom of the stomach to rise more easily when the baby is burped.

13. Some babies will burp as soon as they are placed on your shoulder or on their stomachs on your lap. Since many babies spit up when they burp, place clean cloth diaper, towel or other designated burp cloth on your shoulder or lap when feeding baby.

14. One of the more effective ways of burping a baby is to have the baby seated on your lap an leaning forward supported by your hand, while you stroke or pat baby's back with your other hand. If your baby tends to spit up, hold a diaper under his chin with your supporting hand. This method works better with babies that are a month old or so, when their heads aren't totally wobbly.

15. To rid the bottles of sour milk smell, fill them with warm water and add a teaspoon of baking soda. Shake well and let stand overnight. The next morning wash and sterilize as usual.

16. You can boil the bottle nipples in a glass jar of water in your microwave oven. A teaspoonful of vinegar in the water will prevent any hard water deposits in the jar.

17. Using bottle straws will help formula flow evenly no matter what position the bottle is in.

18. When the time comes, baby can be weaned gradually from the bottle by letting him or her drink directly from the familiar container, but with the nipple removed or replaced by a soda straw.

Cradle Cap - How Safe Are the Homely Remedies!

By Addam Devin

Use of oil is one important remedy prescribed for treating cradle cap. The method is to apply oils, vegetable or chemical, on the affected area and leave for a few hours. Then the scales should be removed with something soft. The risk lies in the fact that unless something really soft is used, the area may get further affected. In the process of removing the scales, the affected area will be disturbed unless the task is carried out with utmost care.

Like this method, the other kind of homely remedies prescribed for cradle cap are also somehow risky. The case of shampoo can be taken as an example. What is suggested is that mild shampoo should be mixed with water in a good proportion and applied to wash the affected area. In this way, the area covered by the scales will remain clean. But the fact is that almost all the shampoos, even the mild ones made for babies contain detergents.

Now, it cannot be said for sure which all detergents are harmful for cradle cap. It may also not be possible to find out whether the detergents contained in the shampoo are harmless or not. Thus, using the shampoo for washing the skin condition without knowing this may become risky. Instead of curing the disease, this may worsen it. With the other kind of remedies, there may be some or the other risk involved.

So, to be in safer side and to avoid the risk of the side effects involved in the process of treating cradle cap with homely remedies, it is better to use the commercial lotions made especially for the purpose of managing the skin condition. There are a number of companies that make lotions for this kind of skin disease. By purchasing any lotion from a reputed brand, cradle cap can be easily managed.

The Addam has extensive knowledge on dermatology, especially on cradle cap. His articles are informative and beneficent for those who are concerned with treatment of skin disease.

Cradle Cap - Use Commercial Lotions, Rose Above Risk

By Addam Devin

Though very easy to afford and use, the homely remedies suggested for treating cradle cap, the crusty, scaly greasy skin condition, sometimes become risky. For example, when you use oils to keep the disease under control, you take a rather serious risk. As prescribed, oils of any type, vegetable or chemical is to be used on the affected area and then left for a few hours.

Then, when the scales on the cradle cap affected area become enough oily, they are to be brushed away something very soft. Here lies the problem; how soft a very soft thing can be! One may use brush, tooth brush or other such kind of things to brush off the scales. But the scales, after being soaked in oils for long hours are bound to become a little sticky. So, it is obvious that they should be removed with some force.

Now, when these are brushed away rather forcefully, there is no guarantee that the condition of the affected area will not worsen. It is true that cradle cap is not infectious nor it is not caused by infection. Yet, when the affected area will be disturbed, it will have every possibility of getting bad to worse, leave alone the pain caused to the baby while brushing away the scales. And this should have to be done again and again.

Same kind of risk is involved in the other homely remedies used to manage cradle cap properly. The use of shampoo is a very popular way of treating the skin condition. A certain amount of shampoo is mixed with water and used to wash the affected area. The risk here is that shampoo, even the mild ones meant for babies contain detergents, something not good for the skin condition. Hence, it is the safest way to use the commercial lotions that are made especially for managing the disease.

The Addam has extensive knowledge on dermatology, especially on cradle cap. His articles are informative and beneficent for those who are concerned with treatment of skin disease.

The Importance of Naming Your Baby

By Tracey Wilson

Congratulations on your happy occasion! Now comes the fun part -- what to name your new baby? Choosing a name is serious business, your child will carry that name for the rest of his/her life.

Think about your given name. Do you think that your name has influenced your personality with any certain characteristics? I believe names carry with them a certain aura. People named the same, carry similar personality traits. We all know words can make a powerful impact -- we've all been lifted up by words, and brought down by hurtful words.

Parents, whatever you do, please name your kids according to their sex. There's nothing worse than a boy named a girl's name, or a girl with a boy's name. Talk to any person who has had to go through school with a name of the opposite sex -- they'll tell you they don't know what in the world their parents were thinking! I think this is especially true for boys with girl's names. It's just cruel.

In addition, you may want to think of the obvious nicknames kids will automatically think up. Schoolchildren can be cruel. Think back to your school years, and of the kids who were called names, based on their real name. I realize you can't protect them from all of life's ugliness, but at the same time, don't make them an easy target.

I worked with someone a few years back, who said her husband was actually going to name his son, Char Cole .... Of course, she put her foot down and would not allow it -- thank goodness. Could you imagine that poor child having to grow up being called, Charcoal?

When you name your baby, you are branding him with all variations, which can be used with that particular name.

My name is Tracey, it's a name that is used for both sexes. I do like that it is spelled differently than most Tracey's (especially at the time I was growing up). More people spell it with an 'e' now, then they did 20-30 years ago. Dick Tracy was very popular when I was a kid, so other kids automatically teased me, calling me Dick Tracy. This didn't really bother me. I think it helped that there were other girls in my class with the same name. When I got old enough, I came up with a cute reply, which brought people smiles and also made them quit calling me by that name. But I do remember always wishing I had more of a feminine name. One that couldn't be used as a boy or girl's name.

One of the things you may like to consider is how you spell the name. Most kids like to have something 'special' about their name. Spell it differently than others, or raise them telling them why their name is so special. What their name means and why you chose to name them the particular name you did. Not only will this make them feel as special as they are, but it will also give them a head start with a bit more confidence and self-esteem.

Guide to Breast-Feeding

By Kiya Sama

If you have decided to breast-feed, the main rule of thumb is to be comfortable and relaxed during feeding. Pick a favorite chair or area of your home and set up a feeding area with all the necessities you may need.

1. A cushioned rocker, armchair, or sofa with low arms will help to make you comfortable while nursing.

2. There is no rule that says you can't catch up on your reading while you're breast-feeding. If you are a tense person, reading may actually be relaxing and help you with the flow, so to speak. Remember, being comfortable and relaxed is important for your flow of milk.

3. If baby falls asleep while nursing at the breast or bottle, take a tip from a mother cat. If you gently stroke the baby, especially on the cheeks and chin, you'll activate the baby's natural suckling mechanism so that feeding continues.

4. Leakage of milk from the breasts can be absorbed by nursing pads, but even these will become soaked occasionally. To prepare yourself for such an occurrence in public, wear printed tops as much as possible. The stains from the leakage will be less visible than if you're wearing a solid color. Also print tops don't show baby-carrying wrinkles as much as solid colors do.

5. If you run out of nursing pads, cut circles from one of baby's disposable diapers or panty liners to substitute for them.

6. To ensure privacy when nursing away from home, place the baby on the lower corner of a receiving blanket instead of the middle as usual. Take the top triangular part of the blanket and place it over your shoulder when placing the baby to your breast. Baby won't smother and you can avoid the stares and curiosity of onlookers. You can also pin a small patch of self-gripping tape to the shoulder seam of your clothing, and sew a similar patch to the top corner of the "nursing" blanket for added security and privacy.

7. While shopping at your local mall or clothing store, ask an attendant if you can use one of the dressing rooms to feed your baby privately and comfortably. It's more pleasant than the rest room.

Your Newborn's skin

By Alvaro Castillo

At birth most infants are covered by a thick white material know as vernix caseosa. This covering is generally washed off within the 1st day, but often some of the material is missed. Do not be disturbed to find white sticky material in such places as behind your child's ears and in the ear folds

The baby's skin will frequently peel in the first week or two of life. This is another normal occurrence during the newborn period. Also, about 50% of American babies are born with a birthmark. The most common type is called a salmon patch.

This patch, when located in the center of the forehead is also known as "angel's kiss", if located on the back of the neck is called the "stork bite." Virtually all salmon patches will disappear in the first few months, although occasionally a stork bite will remain.

Many babies have a dark discoloration around their buttocks. This is found in 95% of African American babies, 80% of Asian American babies, 70% of Hispanic babies and 10% of white babies. This will also disappear.

Strawberry marks are often barely visible at birth. If they can be seen, they are red and white. They will gradually grow, achieving their biggest size at about six months of age. Occasionally, they are quite large. But they always get smaller eventually and should never be treated with surgery or X rays.

In extremely rare cases these strawberry marks trap some of the blood cells (platelets) that assist in preventing bleeding problems. In such cases doctors will administer medicines (steroids). Virtually all strawberry marks will disappear if left alone. Large persistent ones can be surgically removed after the child is older than 6 years.

Port wine stains are large purple marks that occur in about 3 in 1,000 babies. They are a cosmetic problem if they appear on the face. There are currently no good methods for removing these stains. X rays are harmful and must be avoided. Cosmetics may be used to cover these spots.

If a port wine stain covers an entire eyelid, there may be an associated problem with seizures, which will require medical help.

Finally, infants may have brown or black hairy or non hairy moles. More than 2% of white babies and 20% of African American babies have these moles. They do not disappear. Because there is a risk of large moles developing into cancer, many doctors recommend their removal as soon after birth. You should discuss the problem with your doctor.

Believe It Or Not But Toddler Yeast Infections Are A Truth

By Judy Wellsworth

You may not know it but there is a toddler yeast infection. Any baby can get a toddler yeast infection which commonly occurs in the moist diaper area. An toddler yeast infection will typically start out like a diaper rash, but it won't go away and it won't heal like a diaper rash. Babies can also get a condition known as thrush which is a yeast infection of the mouth. With this condition the cheeks, gums and tongue will develop white patches. You should take a baby to the doctor to have a toddler yeast infection properly diagnosed especially if you haven't dealt with an infection of this kind before.

Reasons for The Occurrence of Toddler Yeast Infection:

A tot with a toddler yeast infection will be a baby in distress which can be difficult for parents to deal with. Delivery can spread an toddler yeast infection such as a mother with a yeast infection or during breastfeeding if the mother also has a yeast infection. Although an oral yeast infection can develop in a baby even when there is no yeast infection present.

A toddler yeast infection can be experienced by both sexes. You will often think it is a diaper rash, but it won't go away after the typical one or two day period of diaper rash. Bacteria grow in warm, moist areas on both babies and adults. This is why women have extra concern in their vaginal areas although if a baby isn't attended to then the perfect environment for the bacteria can develop. Also a baby on antibiotics is more susceptible since the medication will kill the healthy bacteria that help to keep down a child yeast infection.

Treatment for Toddler Yeast Infection:

A toddler yeast infection can easily involve both the mouth and the diaper area since it typically spreads through a baby's digestive tract. Take a good look at your babies diaper rash and try to determine if there are a lot of pus-filled bumps or if they are forming a pattern. Often typical treatments for diaper rash won't work and it won't disappear on its own after awhile.

If you are a first time parent you will likely be very concerned and you will probably want to take the baby to the doctor right away to look at the rash. If the same child has a recurrent problem of yeast infections then perhaps your doctor can help with some suggestions on how you can prevent an infant yeast infection. For babies on antibiotics the condition may be around for the course of the medical treatment. Although the best treatment a parent can do is to keep the diaper area as dry as possible and don't fasten diapers too fast, be sure to leave some area for air circulation.

As is the case with all medical issues, the first step is to seek professional help. The reason that your yeast infections are getting worse with regard to frequency must be determined so that a proper treatment regimen may be followed. This is particularly true for women who are living with a compromised immune system, undiagnosed or untreated diabetes or a parasite

Organize Your House For Pregnancy - Preparing Your Home For Your Bundle Of Joy

By Apurva Shree

Your bundle of joy is going to share your home with you. Shouldn't you make an effort to change it for the baby? Organizing your house for pregnancy will make it special for the little one once it comes into this world.

Start At The Pre - Pregnancy Stage Itself

It is better to start preparing your new baby's home from the pre pregnancy stage because once you are pregnant it will get quite tiring for you. If the place is too small for your new born, you can think of a new home. You may require a new cradle for the baby to sleep in beside you immediately after it is born. Later on, it can sleep in another room close by or with your older sibling if this is your second pregnancy period. A diaper changing table maybe thought about, a firm hard table with a soft mattress that you can put the little baby on while changing the diaper. This could also have some storage drawers that store the diapers, clothes, creams, shampoos and medicines used for the new born infant. This should all be a part of pre pregnancy planning.

Making Your Home Child Safe

In pre pregnancy planning, it's important to make your home and surroundings child safe. Children's curiosity knows no bounds and they grow very fast. Please put away all sharp objects in a place where the baby cannot reach them. Keep all electrical fittings covered. Keep your soaps and cleaning items locked in a cupboard. Buy a special car seat for the new born. You may also want to purchase a pram or a stroller to take your little bundle of joy for a leisurely walk outside.

A Happy Disposition

If you don't feel up to doing the housework get some house help. Finally, try to keep yourself in a healthy, peaceful, calm and happy state of mind. I Breastfeed - How Can I Know My Baby is getting Enough Milk?

By Connie Limon

Breastfeeding is recommended most highly by the American Academy of Pediatrics. However, since you can actually see how much your baby is getting, how can you tell if he or she is getting enough through breastfeeding? Actually, there are several ways you can judge this. Your baby is getting enough milk when you observe the following:

• Your baby has frequent wet and dirty diapers
• Your baby appears satisfied after feeding
• Milk is visible during feedings (leaking or dripping)
• Your baby is gaining weight

Right after delivery, your baby should begin to have several wet or dirty diapers each day, at least for the first few days. Around the time your milk comes in, the wet diapers should increase to 6 or more per day. At this time same, baby's stools should start turning green, then yellow.

How many stools should your baby have in a 24 hour period?

• There should be 3 or more stools

What color should these stools be?

• Once breastfeeding starts going well, breastfed babies should have a yellow stool during or after each feeding.
• As baby gets older, stools may occur less often
• After one month of breastfeeding baby may skip a number of days
• If stools are soft and baby is eating and acting well, the reduction in stools, is normal

How often should a newborn baby nurse?

• Every 1 ½ to 3 hours around the clock
• Adding up all feedings over the course of the day should equal to at least 8 to 12 times a day

Other signs your baby is getting enough milk include:

• The infant will have a good latch-on response
• Infant will suckle deeply
• You will hear some swallowing
• The feeding won't be painful
• The baby should appear satisfied and/or sleep until time for next feeding

If your baby sleeps for longer than 4 hours at a time in the first 2 weeks, wake baby up for a feeding. If baby does not awaken enough to eat at least 8 times per day, you need to call the pediatrician for instruction.

Other ways to tell how much milk your baby is getting include:

• How much your child weighs at each doctor's visit? Is the baby gaining weight? This is one of the best ways to tell how much milk your baby is getting.
• The American Academy of Pediatrics recommends that babies be seen for an office visit (or home visit) between 3 to 5 days of age to check on breastfeeding and baby's weight.

Most infants lose several ounces of weight during the first week; however, baby should be back up to their birth weight by the end of the second week. Your baby should gain between ½ and 1 ounce per day during the first 3 months and once your milk supply is established.

What are some of the signs of infant hunger?

• Small movements as baby starts to awaken
• Whimpering or lip-smacking
• Pulling up arms or legs toward the middle
• Stretching or yawning
• Waking and looking alert
• Putting hands toward mouth
• Making sucking motions
• Moving fists to her mouth
• Becoming more active
• Nuzzling against your breast

How Making Homemade Baby Food Affects Your Grocery Bill

By Tamika Gardner

It is shocking that some parents are using credit cards to purchase commercial brands of baby food.

Heather Tolbert, mom to 9-month old Justin, says "When I grocery shop for the family, I usually end up buying anywhere between 40-50 jars of baby food per month, averaging about .79 cents per jar. It adds around $30-40 to my grocery bill each month, and that doesn't include the formula that I buy, which is another $100 per month. So altogether, I'm spending about $130-140 per month extra on Justin's baby food and formula."

When you couple that price with the regular grocery bill, it's no wonder people are using credit, especially if they are on a fixed or reduced income. Moms like Heather Tolbert are using credit cards all the time to supplement the cost of buying food for their babies. Especially with the economy right now in Michigan. People are losing their jobs left and right.

Unless you have in interest free credit card, when you add on finance charges, you could almost buy another months supply of commercial baby food with what you pay in interest. When I asked Heather if she thought about making her own food, she said an astonishing, "No, it never even crossed my mind."

Many parents are convinced that they have to resort to store bought baby food to feed their babies. In fact, the term "baby food" has brought on its own meaning...Gerber, Beechnut, Del Monte, etc. Many parents don't think of simply using fruits and vegetables they may already have on their grocery list to feed their babies.

How much food do you waste every month because it spoiled from not getting consumed? Well, I asked Heather that too. Her response, "Sometimes, I may have a few potatoes, apples, or other fresh food that we don't use quick enough." Well guess what? The food that was left to spoil very well could've been the food for the baby. Two potatoes, cooked and pureed or mashed, could feed a baby for a couple of days. And there isn't a financial impact on the grocery bill.

If the food is going to spoil, why not use it to make and freeze it before it gets to that point? That would at least save the extra money spent on buying commercial baby food. Buying food for your baby doesn't have to put you in debt, and really doesn't add more money on the grocery bill if you plan ahead and purchase fresh or frozen foods that you can puree for your baby to eat.

Parents And Toddler Learning

By Bobby Thomas

Toddlers spend most of their time at home in the company of their family members and this surroundings becomes their classroom for learning new things. That means, their learning process from infancy begins from their home and the people around them. Hence, parents have a very important role to play in the learning process of their toddlers. First of all, the toddlers need your love and support to develop a sense of security and self-esteem, which is essential to stimulate and develop their learning ability. Once they are emotionally strong, it is easy to teach them through play and hands-on-experience by adopting certain strategies.

Toddlers, like all other kids, try to imitate their elders, especially their parents. They learn to do things by imitating your actions. They instinctively copy your behavior, whether it is good or bad. If you are a habitual TV watcher, you can expect your toddlers to become just that. If you are mild and good mannered the kids would follow that. Hence, it is important that you display positive behavior in front of the toddlers so that they learn to do things in a positive manner.

If you want to teach your toddlers something by talking to them, then it would be better if you use positive words instead or ordering or advising them. Instead of ordering them not to do a thing, suggest to them a better and alternative way to do it. Kids respond more favorably and learn faster if you talk to them in a positive encouraging language. Use a lot of complimenting and praising words such as "very good," "well done," and so forth while teaching them. Also, using supportive language makes the child feel emotionally strong and to consider you as a friend and helper in times of need rather than an overbearing and unreasonable person.

A toddler's curiosity is easily aroused and parents can use this tendency to teach them new things by drawing their attention to unfamiliar things. This is learning by observation, and honing this skill of observation is important for the kid's future. Also, ask questions about things to which the child can think of an answer. Encourage the child to think and say the answer, and if the answer is wrong then explain to him/her about the thing, instead of correcting always. Also, when the kid is curious about something and wants to know more about it then tell her/him all about it. You can get more information on the subject from books. If the child is curious about a picture or photo then take her to a place where she can see the original, if possible.

Toddlers and Learning

By Shoby Nair

Although toddlers are too young to attend schools, their learning process starts very early from infancy at their homes. Their home, near and dear ones, and the world around them become their classroom. They learn new things every day by dealing with people they come across both at home and outside, and exploring and experimenting with the world and things around them. In this way they learn new things practically all through out their waking hours.

They learn a lot of things through the various activities they perform as children. Toddlers are particularly fond of playing, and it is an important learning activity. Playing is in-fact their most important occupation. Playing teaches them body balance and motor co-ordination, as well as inter-personal relationships and social skills. Playing with playmates teaches them to co-operate and work as team. They also learn to negotiate and settle any challenges, conflicts or problems that might arise during play. Moreover, they learn new things from their senior playmates and also learn to teach their junior playmates. All these skills will be useful to them when they grow up. Both indoor and outdoor games are important.

Apart from playing, hands-on-experience is another important source of learning. Like all children, toddlers like to do many things by themselves and they should be given a chance to do things which are safe, or under your supervision. These experiences will increase their curiosity and capability. Some activities such as brushing the teeth, eating, using a small broom or a toy hammer, wearing clothes, and so forth are safe for toddlers if done in your presence. Additionally, their curiosity can be further stimulated by giving them open-ended materials to play. These materials, such as crayons and papers, building blocks, simple musical instruments, play-dough, and so forth have multi-purpose activities. Toddlers can work on these materials in multiple ways and learn from the experience.

Fitness With Your Baby!

By Kim Duess

There is no doubt that when you have a baby there is little time for you or your training. Most new parents struggle to find the time to do anything except care for their newborn. However, babies are so forgiving in the beginning so this is a great time to get outside and share the beautiful outdoors with them. Not to mention the amazing ab, butt & thigh workout pushing, pulling, carrying an extra 10-15 lbs around!

Getting back into shape after having a baby is also a challenge, however, getting back to your pre-pregnancy fitness will give you more energy for those long days ahead. Remember to ease into any activity and don't be focused on losing the weight fast. Go easy at first, keep and eye on your heart rate and do what your body says you can and rest when you're tired. Always consult your doctor before beginning any exercise program.

Below are a few ideas to make it a little easier to get outside and get some fresh air with your baby. This way you can start them on the road to exploring the great outdoors and they will be hooked on a healthy lifestyle for the rest of their lives.

There are many companies making it easier to get outside with your baby. The ultimate has to be the off-road carriers that can be used for running, towing behind a bike or on the snow with skis. These allow the baby to be comfortable, warm, and to see what's going on while your out. This also allows you to jog, bike, or ski with your baby and shed those last few post-pregnancy pounds. Choose one that can do multiple functions, therefore, allowing you to do more things without the added cost.

By training with your baby in the morning, you can wake up together, feed them and then head outside. Then you will be back in time for lunch at home and a nap. While out, tie a toy to the backpack or stroller for them to look at or play with to keep them occupied. Newborns should be in a front pack as it is more comfortable for them to sleep and you can keep an eye on them as well. Check the back of their neck to ensure they are not too cold or too hot and take them out of their packs or strollers often; they don't like cramped legs any more than we do.

Carry extra food, bottles and clothing with you so that you have all your amenities ready when needed. Being self sufficient means that you will have less stress and you and your baby will be more comfortable while your out exploring.

Fresh air and exercise is good for everyone. Get outside with your baby and show them how much you love them. It will keep you both balanced, refreshed and healthy.

Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS)

By Alvaro Castillo

Infant breathing patterns are often irregular. There may be periods of 5 to 10 seconds when an infant will stop breathing, this is known as an apneic spell. Normal infants outgrow this pattern, characteristic of a certain state of sleep, is normal for newborns, and should not be of concern to the parents unless it persists for a number of months.

Many parents fear that their infants will stop breathing and become victims of SIDS. Although SIDS is the leading cause of death beyond the newborn period, it is important to remember that the risk is about 1 in 600 before age one and declines rapidly after 6 months.

The risk of this syndrome higher for children whose siblings had the problem and for premature infants. Don't panic if your child's breathing is erratic, with the child not taking a breath for 10 to 15 seconds. Discuss pauses longer than that with your doctor.

There are a number of ways to diagnose and manage SIDS, including monitors and medications. Parents who have experienced a previous loss of a child should discuss the benefits and risks of and apnea monitor with their physician. Parents can reduce the risk of SIDS following these rules:

• It is essential for the mother not to smoke during her pregnancy or after birth. Infants who die from SIDS are 2 or 3 times more likely to have mothers who smoke

• The American Academy of Pediatrics recommends that healthy infants sleep on their sides or their backs. There is convincing evidence that infants who sleep on their stomachs are more vulnerable to SIDS.

• Since the American Academy of Pediatrics recommended in 1992 that infants sleep on their back, SIDS have decreased more than 40%. Premature infants and those with respiratory or intestinal problems may do better sleeping on their stomach in those circumstances, you should rely on your doctor's judgment.

• As a general rule babies do not need to sleep on pillows, infant cushions have even been banned because of the risk of suffocation

However, consult your doctor if you have any further concerns or questions.

How to Throw Baby Shower for Twins with Awesome Baby Shower Favors

By Caroline Miller

A baby shower is an immensely joyous occasion not just for the parents to be, but also the guests who won't be unmoved by all the joy and warmth that welcoming a new life presents. Unlike a wedding where you can't really be sure the couple's marriage will last longer than the flowers, a baby shower is a promise of new beginnings that will last a lifetime.

A shower for twins is well...double the fun, and double the joy. There are some special factors that you'll need to include while planning a shower for your friend or relative who's having twins.

A woman carrying twins is going to be under increased strain during the last months of her pregnancy, so make sure you ask her about her preference for the guest list. If she doesn't want a too large gathering of friends, relatives, neighbors and their dog, don't pressure her to. If she's looking forward to a big blast however, don't disappoint her. Remember, she's suffering double the hormonal surges, and needs some time to relax!

Baby gifts for a twin baby shower will have to be for both babies. That includes strollers, car seats and carriages for two etc. Obviously, not too many guests will be able to afford two of everything. This is where your planning genius comes in. Make sure that all guests are informed beforehand that gifts that have been bought by a group of people are best. For instance, friends could get together to pool in money for a large twin stroller, office workers, if they are invited could pool in for two car seats and so on.

Baby gift baskets for a twin shower work best if they are created around a theme. One set of people could have a safety themed gift basket with a thermometer, cotton swaps, baby Tylenol etc. A bed time basket could contain bedding, a nursery monitor, lullaby CDs, and comfy nightclothes for the twins. Two sets of everything will be required, so dividing the baby gift baskets by theme like this will ensure that the parents, who will have double the expenses after their bundles of joy arrive, can have some of their financial burden taken off of them.

Make sure the baby shower favors you choose are twin themed. Online stores these days have favors for just about every kind of baby and situation, and you'll have no trouble finding a baby shower favor that's double the giving pleasure!

Baby Shower Favors - How to Cut Your Costs in Half

By Caroline Miller

Not everyone who's being generous enough to throw a shower will have unlimited funds to spend on every facet of the shower. There's food to take care of, gifts for prizes for the games at the party, and let's not forget, the baby shower favors that each guest will clutch as they leave the party.

It makes sense to give your guests beautiful and useful baby shower favors. After all, they've taken the time to attend the shower, and congratulated the soon to be mom, and they've made to a point to arrive with baby gifts that the mother will love. Most of all, they've shared their experience with the mother, encouraged her before her big day, and given countless gems of wisdom and advice that she can use as she begins this journey of a lifetime.

For all these reasons alone, your guests deserve to go home with a small but thoughtful token of your appreciation for making the shower a success. If you're on a limited budget, try to create your own shower favors, or choose less expensive ones from online sites. But whatever you do, don't cut out the baby shower favors altogether.

If you have friends with crafts friendly fingers, enlist their help to make some hand made baby shower favors in time for the big day. There's no limit to the things you could make. Beaded necklaces with large and small beads make a style statement. Place in an empty baby gift basket at the entrance or near the desert table after every one has finished dining, and let guests pick the ones they like.

Homemade goodies are always appreciated. Buy some flour, eggs, milk and sugar and bake up a storm! Cookies, delicious brownies, cupcakes - anything that you can whip up in batches can make delicious and welcome baby shower favors. Remember to pack in cellophane or translucent packaging and twist off at the top. Buy little bows or kids fancy hair clips, and attach to the tie twist for added appeal.

Have a Polaroid camera on hand, and take pictures of each guest with the parents to be at the shower. Gift them the picture as they leave. They'll have an everlasting memory of your baby shower favor.

Baby shower favors at online stores aren't as expensive as you think. Every time you buy in bulk, the retailer cuts costs and passes those savings to you, so you're likely to find inexpensive, but pretty favors that are within your budget.

How to Create A Baby Shower Registry for Twins

By Caroline Miller

A baby shower registry for a couple that's expecting a baby can take a lot of stress of the expenses of readying the nursery for baby. Add to that the added expenditure when you're expecting twins, and a baby shower registry should probably be on the things on the top of your to do list.

Planning for twins is obviously different from planning g for a single child, but contrary to what you think, it doesn't have to be double the expenditure. Keep the following points in mind when you're creating a registry for baby gifts and you'll be able to cut the gift buying considerably. You don't want to saddle your friends and relatives with lots of stuff that you might not necessarily use. The host of the party, especially will already be saddled with the other expenses of throwing you a shower like baby shower favors, food and decorations, and doesn't need to be saddled with extra and heavy expenditure.

There are many baby gifts that can be used for both babies without the necessity of buying an extra piece of each. Baby gift baskets are perfect because each individual piece can be used for either baby, and nothing goes to waste.

You don't really need two separate cribs in the initial days. It's not as if your newborn twins will be rolling about - a single large sized crib is fine. Once they get bigger and need their own space, you can buy an extra one for one twin.

You will also not need two changing tables, no matter what you think. It's highly unlikely that you will change both babies at the same time and after some time, diaper changing becomes a matter of seconds. Once you get deft at it, (which will be pretty soon) you'll be able to change them one at a time. So, simply register for a single changing table.

Other things that you don't need two of is a nursery monitor, and diaper bag. Register for a single sturdy large sized diaper bag if you haven't already purchased it, and use it to stash extra diapers for twin duty. In any case, you'll look pretty funny with two diaper bags. Play pens if you're including that in your registry, should also be of a single piece.

A baby bathtub and a diaper pail are also perfectly fine in ones. You'll never use both at the same time anyway.

Don't hold back on twin strollers, car seats or bouncy seats though. These can't be shared, and having just one will make traveling with your babies impossible.

Baby Shower Ideas Off the Beaten Path

By Caroline Miller

Think baby shower, and you think of a haggle of women laughing and joking as the mother to be opens her presents. These are what traditional baby showers are like, but there's no rule that says that this is exactly how they have to be. Adventurous girls these days are going off the beaten path to look for party ideas for their shower. If you think the entire cackling women scenario is a little corny, you'll enjoy these ideas for a different baby shower complete with baby shower favors, food and decorations.

There's always been an unwritten rule that baby showers are strictly women's territory, and guys aren't allowed in. But like the bridals shower, these conventions are being given a miss by modern moms who want to celebrate the arrival of their baby with male friends, relatives and husband in tow. If you're looking to throw an enjoyable party for your sister or friends, invite her male friends, and make sure her husband has a prominent place to play in the proceedings.

A mixed shower will call for some changes in the kind of activities you plan for the shower. Games will have to be developed to include male guests and baby shower favors will have to include items that guys like. Fortunately, you don't have to worry about the favors - you'll easily find lots of goodies for the guys.

Or plan a couple's shower. Do away with the traditional shower tables and plan a sit down formal dinner for just the parents to be and their couple friends. If you're throwing the shower for your friends, remember to ask guests to bring along baby gifts of their choice or make suggestions depending on what the mother needs. You want to have some elements of the shower to differentiate it from just another party. Baby gift baskets, baby bunches and other collections of assorted items are always an excellent choice.

If a sit down dinner isn't your style, invite couple friends of the parents to a casual brunch at their home. If it's summer maybe an evening outdoor, grilling steaks...the only rule is there are no rules. Smaller intimate dinners like these give the mother a chance to relax with her closest friends and are perfect especially if you know, mom has been having a difficult time with her pregnancy, and might be overwhelmed with a traditional baby shower.

Picky Eater Tips

By Cindy Maddy

There are the toddlers who love to eat, and the toddlers who don't. One thing we as parents need to keep in mind is that every child is unique and we need to be able to adjust our parenting style to each individual. What we do know is that our grandparent's way of doing things have long been outdated. It is possible to say that the old saying..."you are not leaving the table till you finish everything on your plate." .....has caused some health issues in our country as a whole. Children eat when they are hungry. Plain and simple. They don't eat because of emotional issues or because they are bored. When you approach your toddlers eating style in that respect, it might clear your head of the worries that your child isn't eating enough.

The next thing to really understand is the need for independence at this age. Toddlers need to be allowed to do things for themselves. You can assist this process by providing finger foods. Having cut up carrot sticks, celery sticks, apples, grapes, cheerios, and things of that nature, it will make you happy and your child. The other benefit to always having those types of snacks in the house is that they become part of Everyday FOOD. Most people don't follow the food pyramid and they should. Especially for your children. You need to also set a good example as well, they watch their parents and look at you as their roll models...set a good example. Eat the fruits and veggies too! It is a win win situation.

Include your child in the choices made at the grocerie store when you are in the produce isle. Ask your child if they would like some apples..and say it with enthusiasm. When we go to the store with my daughter she really gets excited over the bananas and the apples and the grapes and carrots. People actually give me funny looks about how my child is so excited about fruit and veggis. LOL I love it. It makes me feel like I am doing a good job as a parent.

We have been lucky in the aspect of candy with our daughter. She really doesn't ask for it at the store or does she eat a lot of it. One thing we have found to work well as a great substitute for candy is Karob chips. We found them in the bulk isle at Market of Choice. We all like a sweet snack at times, and our daughter loves them. She just thinks they are like M & M's ...yet these save her teeth! Wooo Hooo.

How to Choose Clothing for Your Children - Tips For Women

By Chris Robertson

The dilemma of buying children's clothing begins even before your child is born. After having a baby, women usually receive some clothes as baby gifts. Often these are small sizes that your child will outgrow very soon. So you can see that buying clothes is an ongoing task for parents.

As an infant, a baby will change sizes every few weeks. Buy durable clothing in washable, comfortable fabrics. Babies have many accidents so you'll need to buy clothes that are easy to clean. If you use bright colors instead of pastels, they will not soil or stain as easily. When shopping for children's clothes, many women seek high-quality clothing. But if you‚re on a tight budget, you can always wait for clothing store sales at places such as Gap, Old Navy, Disney Baby, or Babies R Us.

Bargain Seekers

With the knowledge that a child will outgrow their clothing quickly, some women go thrift shopping and check garage sales. Many times these clothes are barely worn and may even look almost new. Thrift shopping is a good way to find children's brand name clothing without paying the full price. Sometimes clothing for boys in larger sizes is harder to find at these sources because of the wear and tear. Finding clothing for girls may be a bit easier. The key to finding great clothes at a bargain is to shop often. Visit your local thrift shop once a week and frequent yard sales in your area.

Yard sales are even better than thrift stores in some ways because you can bargain with the seller. Try picking out a bundle of clothing and other items; then make an offer for the entire bundle. You might be surprised at how little you will pay for items. Also, check for bargains through the newspaper classifieds. Occasionally, you'll see offerings for children's clothing directly through the ads.

Preparing for Ever-Changing Sizes and Needs

When your child gets to the toddler stage, clothing needs will change. During and after potty training, separate tops and bottoms will be more practical. Dresses and pull-on pants make training easier and encourage the toddler to be independent. Buy clothes that are easy to put on and take off so your toddler can learn to dress himself. You will need to buy good shoes that are comfortable. When fitting shoes, allow a half-inch in front of the toes when standing and make sure the heel fits properly.

If you have younger children of the same gender but different ages, or if you plan to have another baby soon, keep unsoiled clothing put away for the next child. This will save you money, and younger children usually never know the difference. Store the clothing in a dry, tightly sealed plastic container to keep mice and moths out. Include a fabric sheet to keep the clothes smelling fresh.

Buying Children's Clothing for School

When your child starts school, clothing needs will again change. At this time, your child may want to help pick out clothes. Before you go shopping for clothes, have your child try on last year's clothes and see what can still be worn. Then look for clothing that is comfortable, washable, and easy to keep clean. Many mothers choose children's clothing that is simple with large buttons and has zippers with pulls, elastic waists, and large neck openings. Buy clothes that are appropriate and safe. Avoid big legs, loose ribbons or sashes, and slippery shoes. Even if you can't afford expensive fashionable clothes, choose basic clothing in colors and styles your child likes.

Watch for store sales on school clothing and save money if your state has tax-free shopping days. In the winter, dress your child in layers. While they are outdoors they can wear their coats, hats, gloves, and scarves. Inside, they can also wear layers to remove if they become uncomfortable. A sweatshirt over a button-up shirt or a t-shirt under a button-up shirt will provide this option. Many women with smaller children choose clothing that will be easy to remove when going to the bathroom. The teachers always appreciate this!

Remember that some styles may be cute and very stylish but not comfortable or practical. Look at women's magazines to get ideas, or talk to other mother's that have more experience with children‚s clothing to make the best choices.

Can Babies Learn From TV?

By Rachel Dominique

Which educational DVD/VCD should I get? Or should I get a subscription channel instead? Will the show be beneficial for my child?

I'm sure that these questions flash pass your mind when you enter a video shop or aisle while you are shopping at the supermarket.

Nowadays the choices are plentiful with a wide array of Child specialist promoted/recommended VCD/DVD and even dedicated baby channels such parents are spoilt for choice.

There are many experts who proclaim that children under 2 yrs old should not be exposed to television. I beg to differ as through my personal experience a moderate and co-viewing of programs does help to teach my children certain basic concepts.

Babies one year old and under are very impressionable and their minds absorb like sponges. Their ability to learn and comprehend should not be understated and taken for granted.

TV viewing is very powerful and the graphical representations on screen extremely captivating. It is a rich source of learning and can assist the parent in showing the child items/pictures which could not be seen in normal daily life. Eg: Animals in the zoo. Babies are also introduced the the various

I have seen my kids eyes been fixed on the screen every time a particular jingle is played while they watched the program I pre-selected for them. They stare mesmerized to the screen throughout the duration while trying to imitate the dance movement or sing-along with the characters. Through repeated viewings of the program they learn how to associate certain objects IE: Apple with the word.

Through the visuals and sounds they see and hear from the program they get a grasp of how a certain item looks like and the associated sound of the word which is linked to it. It also helped in building up their vocabulary.

The Dangers of Giving Your Baby Cereal in a Bottle

By Tamika Gardner

Many parents have been adding cereal to their babies bottles with the hopes that baby will sleep better through the night or because they feel the baby is not getting enough to eat.

If you've heard the statements, "Add cereal to your babies bottle and he'll sleep for 5 hours" or "If your baby constantly wants to nurse or seems hungry, add cereal to the bottle," know that those are myths and not facts.

Your baby gets enough nutrition from breast milk or formula for the first 6 months of life. In fact, many medical experts agree that introducing cereal before 4 months of age can cause food allergies. Additionally, adding cereal to your babies bottle is a bad idea. Period.

Experts like Dr. Alan Greene, M.D. believe that the sucking and swallowing actions are not fully coordinated in some children, which can lead to pulmonary problems because they can inhale small amounts of rice cereal in their lungs.

What other dangers are there with adding cereal to a babies bottle? For one thing, your child could very well be on the road to obesity. The extra calories in the cereal itself is enough to teach your child to overeat. When your child is at least 4 months of age, it is more suitable to introduce cereal by feeding your baby with a spoon. Not only does this teach them to learn to eat from a spoon, but it also allows them to rest in between and it helps the baby learn the proper way to eat.

Well, what about your mother, and your grandmother, and your sister, and all those people who swear that adding cereal to a babies bottle will help them sleep and stay satisfied longer? Dr. Alan Greene, M.D. states, "I suspect the reason is that kids do fall asleep a bit more quickly, and some babies may even go a bit longer between feedings. There is no scientific evidence, though, to support the claim that cereal in the bottle will help an infant increase total sleep or decrease crying."'

The American Academy of Pediatrics also advises against feeding a baby cereal from a bottle. The only time feeding a baby cereal in a bottle is when your Pediatrician recommends it to help with reflux.

Obesity. Food Allergies. Pulmonary problems. Bad eating habits. Those are all enough reasons to steer away from giving your baby a bottle of cereal. You may be happy you did.
