How Safe Is Your Baby's Bubble Bath?

By Diane Cuesta

The disturbing increases in childhood illnesses in America cannot be ignored! So what is causing so many of these illnesses? Research shows that everyday chemicals may be putting our children at risk. One factor is that children are being affected by their exposure to chemicals in many skin care products on the market. If you read the ingredients, you will find many baby bubble bath products contain potentially harmful ingredients.

From head to toe, the skin is our body's largest organ and it is extremely sensitive to whatever it comes in contact with. We tend to think of our skin only as a barrier, our body's first line of defense. Yet it is to realize that our skin is also very "thirsty." Whatever touches the skin is absorbed to some degree directly into our body. Think about how medicines are now commonly given through the use of a patch applied directly to the skin. This simple external exposure allows the medicine to be taken in and produce its affect on our entire body. This example dramatically illustrates that what we put on our body inevitably ends up in our body!

What factors increase toxicity and how can parents protect children from harm? Our children's skin is delicate and sensitive. One ingredient to avoid in skin care products is DEA or diethanolamine. DEA is currently being used in hundreds of home and personal care products including bubble baths, soaps, cosmetics, lotions, shampoos, conditioners and dishwashing and laundry detergents. DEA belongs to a class of chemicals known as alkanolamines and has been linked with kidney, liver, and other organ damage according to several government-funded research studies. DEA has been proven to cause cancer in rats when applied to the skin. Research has found that DEA has low acute toxicity but significant cumulative toxicity. It cannot be easily excreted from the body but instead builds up in the fatty tissues of the liver, brain, kidneys, and spleen with repeated dermal exposure. The topical application of DEA collects in the tissues in rodents, which resulted in anemia, kidney degeneration, and nerve damage to the brain and spinal cord. Even more disturbing was that several animals died before the study ended.

What Parents Can Do DEA is but one of many ingredients used in personal skin care products suspected of causing or contributing to cancer. So what can parents do? Start by investigating and educating yourself about the ingredients in the products that you use. ONLY purchase baby skin care products for your babies, children, as well as yourself that are "chemical free." Choose not to wait for the FDA to provide you with scientific, conclusive proof that can only be obtained through lengthy studies. Do you want to risk your baby's or your health waiting for the conclusions of studies? Take self-responsibility! Be an active, aware and educated consumer that shops for products with SAFE ingredients in personal skin care products. Buy from green companies that are interested in people and the planet's welfare.

Here's to your family's good health!

Must Know Toddler Tips

By Cindy Maddy

There are no instructions that come when you have a child. However, thanks to the internet and other moms with time on their hands, we can come together to help each other out. There are always going to be the tough times. There will always be tough ages as well. That is why I have put together the best Toddler Tips all in one place.

How to ENJOY the Toddler Years

As I watch my 2 year old daughter everyday, I fill with joy. This is one of my favorite times; not only in my life but in her life as well. She is so full of happiness and with that brings me happiness. She is always ready to learn more, and is full of excitement and enthusiasm.

I have found that by setting good examples and understanding she is a TODDLER, I am not really facing the dreaded "terrible two's" stage. I can take her in public, I can have people over or go to other peoples houses. I have found that she responds better to me when I listen to her instead of enforcing the "do as I say" or "because I am the parent" rules on her. I give her room to be the little "big" girl that she is.

Potty Training Tips

We let her decide when to introduce the "potty" to her. We let her watch us go to the bathroom and explained the whole thing to her since she was born really. Then when she was 16 months old she woke up from a nap and pulled me into the bathroom. She pulled down her pants and asked me to help with the diaper. She then implied that she wanted to sit on the toilet. She didn't go to the bathroom at that point..but she did take the toilet paper and pretend to wipe and then flushed the toilet. I was in awe. After that we went to the store and bought her a "Potty" of her own. Over the last 6-7 months we have just let her get used to it on her own terms. And now she just turned two and is jumping leaps and bounds with understanding what the whole thing is all about. She knows what to do and where to do it when the time comes. We make a big deal about it too..when we hear the music go off due to her going in the potty!

Toddler Sleeping Tips

We let our daughter sleep with us since day one. Everyone has had something to say about it as well. Don't let that bother you if you do it. They are only going to be with you for a short amount of time. Cherish every moment! However, now that she is 2 she takes up the WHOLE bed. We don't' get a good night sleep and neither does she. We have had her crib next to our bed since she was 6 months old and have slowly introduced it to her. We did try the leave her in it and see if she will learn to self soothe. It doesn't work! Well, not for us. It hurts us too much to hear her cry with such hurt feelings. So what we ended up buying was a toddler bed to put in her room. Again, we don't force it on her. It has been over 2 months and she has slept with us maybe 5 times. She ASKED for the crib or the toddler bed. It has become her choice and a fun thing to do.

Baby Strollers - A Safe Carriage for Babies

By Jayson Pablo

A baby stroller or a buggy is a popular baby transport. It is generally used to carry a child of up to 3 years of age. In a stroller, the child sits in a manner that she or he does not faces the pusher. A perambulator or pram is used to carry new born babies. It has the infant lying down in it, facing the pusher. Prams were first used in the UK during the Victorian period. Later, a suspension mechanism was added to the baby carriage that made ride smooth both for the child and the parents.

A baby stroller is comparatively smaller in size and also costs less than a pram. A more compact form of buggy, called Pushchair was released in the UK during early 1980s. The carriage became an instant hit among the Britishers as it was made of a collapsible aluminum frame. A variety of strollers are also available in the markets that are used to carry twin babies or two babies of similar age.

Travel systems are the latest evolution of baby strollers. They typically consist of a chassis with a detachable carrycot or baby seat. It can be conveniently switched between a pram and a pushchair as per needs. Its baby seat allows undisturbed movement of the baby on to a car seat. It thus considerably reduces the chances of inadvertently waking up a sleeping baby while one moves her or him to a car seat. The United Nations Economic Commission for Europe (UN ECE) has categorized car seats into five mass groups. While the Group 0 seat can carry children of up to 10 kg, the Group 1 seats can carry children weighing 9 to 18 kg.

The latest versions of baby strollers are light weight and come equipped with swivel wheels for easy maneuvering. A number of retailers in the UK also sell buggies that can be customized according to the needs of the baby and the parents. Current strollers feature a number of baby safety designs like sun rider canopies, easy step-in rear stadium style seating and drink holders.

Colostrum - The First Baby Milk

By Jyoti Bedi

Key Facts

1. Your baby reaps many benefits if breastfed right after delivery. Colostrum or premilk contains important proteins and antibodies and it is produced a few days before your milk 'comes in'. First milk protects your baby against infection during her first 72 hours of life. It is quite scarce in quantity but very valuable in terms of content. Your baby stands to gain greatly from frequent feedings of this yellow fluid.

2. Colostrum is often referred to as 'liquid gold' owing to its properties; it provides perfect nutrients for a newborn and also imparts large amount of living cells to provide your child with immunity against many harmful agents. You may notice the leak of 'practicing milk' as early as 20 weeks or the fifth month of pregnancy but not all women experience this. Human placental lactogen or HPL is responsible for its production.

3. Conversely, mature breast milk contains lower concentrations of antibodies but it is higher in volume. Baby continues to benefit from the disease fighting properties of human milk as long as it is breastfed.

Colostrum is beneficial because:

It is low in fat, high in protein, carbohydrates and vitamin K. What's more it is easy on baby's tummy.

It starts your baby's digestive system working.

It works as a natural, 100% safe vaccine; the immune agents contained in colostrom are much higher in comparison to mature milk.

While in the utero, the placenta provided your baby with the antibody IgG; now with a new antibody, secretory immunoglobulin A (IgA), your baby is protected from germs attacking areas like the mucous membranes in the throat, lungs and intestines.

It protects baby's gastrointestinal tract; colostrum seals the permeable holes of the intestines and prevents foreign bodies from entering the intestines.

It sensitizes baby to the foods the mother eats.

It acts as a laxative by loosening baby's first stool or meconium (black sticky substance contained in the intestines); excess bilirubin is expelled from the system thus preventing jaundice.

It also contains high concentrations of leucocytes, protective white cells that destroy harmful bacteria and viruses.

Fantasy Dress and Costumes for Kids and Babies

By Sarah Freeland

When you get into the Gothic style of life you begin to realize that there is a large component that allows the attitude that "anything is possible." It is a very romanticized and hugely popular way of life. Part of this "anything goes" belief is that there are limitless possibilities in reality. Many may call it playing dress up, but to many in the gothic culture fantasy dress is just a continued part of the "anything goes" life. The fantasies most common with the little ones are the probably the fairies, pirates, witches, and wizards. The look for these young ones is quite similar to their larger counterparts.

For the typical fairy you would see a net, or tulle skirt, over a silky or satin skirt with a silky or satin top. The most important part of this outfit would be the wings with varying materials depending on the occasion and the exact age of the young one in question. The pirate would have his red and black striped shirt, with his leather or vinyl pants. The witch and wizard look is classically black with some colors of green, purple, or red. You might find some striped leggings for the witch in the bunch, but look for that classic cape for the wizard.

You may be thinking, "but it isn't Halloween!" Remember... "Anything is possible." This means that anything goes. The style is part of the culture, which tends to incorporate many different facets of religion and mysticism. Being able to express oneself through dress is seen in their eclectic style.

How To Entertain Your Toddler - 4 Great Activities

By Anna L

Do you and your toddler get bored? Do you feel like you are doing the same activities over and over again? So you are running out of ideas, need a little help with How To Entertain Your Toddler. Believe me I have been there. I stay home with my 3 year old son, the greatest kid, but I needed help with some new ideas of activities for us to do.

Here are some great activities, how to entertain your toddler. (Before you go on I have to tell you about this great book I found - 101 Ways How To Entertain Your Toddler - 101 ways? YES, a life savior.)

1. Music and Dancing, is a lot of fun both for you and your toddler. If you want to close the blinds J go ahead. You pick a couple of songs, let your son or daughter pick a couple of songs and then you dance and sing together. Have a dance contest and let your toddler decide if you are a 5 or a 10 when you dance, you can even make some numbered signs. You will fun and get good exercise as well.

2. Take your toddler on a discovery walk. Take half and hour or so, walk out the door and let your toddler decide which direction to walk in. If she wants to stop and explore a flower or maybe a ladybug, let her. Count the dots on the ladybugs back, check what colors you can see. Make sure you do all this with your toddler and have fun doing it. Ask her what she sees, smells and hears. You will have fun listening to the answers. Bring a bag and let her collect some fun stuff that you can glue on a paper when you get back, leaves, sticks or maybe flowers. That will make a fun indoor project.

3. Dress up fun. Go to Goodwill and get a bunch of fun, fancy dress up clothes (old dresses, a boa, high heels, hats, boots, jackets, dress pants, ties). Have your toddler put on a fashion show, if you want to - join your toddler. Have a tea party, play office or restaurant. Let your toddler's imagination flow. Make sure to bring out the camera.

4. Let your toddler be the author of her own book. Let her pick a fun event, if you did a trip, when she went to stay with grandma and grandpa or when she went swimming or if she got a pet. Let her decide and have her dictate a little story to you. Then you put a few sentences down on a couple of pages and have her draw pictures to them. Staple it together or buy a binder and her book is done. She will feel so proud of her own work.

Good luck and have a great time with your toddler. If you want to know more about the 101 Ways How To Entertain Your Toddler visit http://www.helpmeandmyfamily.com

Have You Become a Chew-Toy?

By Kelly Ballard

Recently several of my friends and clients have had babies and are experiencing some new issues with nursing and babies. Here are a few tips to survive and thrive during this time...

1. To breastfeed or not: Do not let anyone bully you into this choice - including your husband. You have given 10 months to growing this precious bundle of joy inside and if nursing is not for you - don't. Yes, we all know the benefits of nursing, but all are outweighed by "over-whelmed, stressed-out mom." I did breastfeed for 7-8 months each time, but truly, besides the painful, sore nipples in the beginning - I had no issues with milk production, infections or the like...So this was not difficult for me. Really look at yourself and decide what is best for you?

2. Nursing and bottles: If you do decide to nurse, you will hear a lot of different advice about when to introduce bottles as to avoid nipple confusion. Personally, if you have a baby who does not have difficulty "latching on" - use a bottle of pumped milk within the first week. The experts will tell you to wait 4 -6 weeks as to avoid nipple confusion - wrong. By waiting all that time, it becomes a big drama to introduce the bottle later. One of my children would not accept a bottle at all - nightmare...Also, have your mate provide the bottle as to help support baby bonding for them and go take a shower or break. Continue to have your mate provide bottles as to avoid the situation that only "you" can quiet the baby - this can feel gratifying in the beginning, but trust me, you will be setting yourself up for headaches later when the crying is louder.

3. Are you the only person that can quiet the baby?: When the baby starts crying, do you immediately begin breastfeeding? This is dangerous territory for both you and your mate. Of course, in the beginning this makes sense, but as you master nursing - are you allowing your mate to really bond with the baby? I remember when we had my daughter and the odd sense of power as to be the "one" who could quiet the baby by merely handing the baby and breastfeeding. However this dynamic becomes your worst nightmare as suddenly any time the baby starts crying she/he is handed immediately over to you for you to "fix." This gets old - quick, and then you become resentful of your mate for not being able to help out with the crying baby - the problem you helped to create...Hence, vicious circle. So make a bottle for the baby and mate, and leave the house, go for a walk, whatever - they will work it out.

4. Have you become a chew-toy?: Are you breastfeeding all the time? Not just during growth spurts? Guess what? You have now passed from providing comfort and sustenance for your baby to "chew-toy." Have you tried a binky? Again this has been the cause of much debate - the whole nipple confusion issue again and teeth...I again go back to, what is good for you and the baby? My daughter had a binky in her face 'til three and my son never touched it - much to my dismay. Babies like to suck on things - plain and simple, some are more oral then others. You decide what is best for you and your family.

5. When to wean: The experts push for a year. Not for me. At seven months old my daughter had become so busy during the day that she wanted to nurse all night. After several nights of this, I soon realized I was becoming the meanest person in the room due to no sleep. She weaned in about a week. My son was/is plagued by allergies and I weaned at eight months because I could not get my diet clean enough as to not affect him. His skin problems cleared up a day or two after I stopped nursing - probably should have stopped earlier. Again, do not be pressured by anyone - they do not give any prizes for nursing the longest, etc...A girlfriend stopped nursing after about a month - she had run into problem after problem, stressed-out, but her husband still wanted her to continue...She stopped and was able to calm down because she wasn't always worried about the baby not "getting enough." And then, I have lots girlfriends/clients easily nursing for a year - personal choice, no wrong decisions. Look at where you are in your life and decide what would support you and your baby best.

I hope these tips can help to answer a few of your concerns. Please remember that this is a vulnerable time for new Moms and Dads - sensitivities run high. A little patience with yourself and others goes a long way...Experts are just people with another opinion and in most cases; you can weigh the choices/options best for your family - not a stranger from a book.

Problem - Baby or Toddler Will Not Go to Sleep Alone

By Sherry Carroll

My first born was not an easy baby or toddler. As an infant, he had to be sound to sleep before being placed in his cradle or crib. As he grew older, his sleep habits did not improve. He would cry unless he was asleep when placed in his crib unless he was completely asleep.

We tried everything. We would ride him around in the car. He would sleep while the car was moving, but the minute it came to a standstill, he was wide awake. We bought a cradle that had an automatic rocker. As long as it was in motion, he would sleep. Again, once it stopped its rocking motion, he was wide awake. We found that rocking him to sleep in a dark room was usually the best method, especially if he woke up at night. He was not interested in a bottle; he simply wanted someone to rock him to sleep while he sucked on his ever present pacifier.

We were advised to "let him cry." We were also told to go into the room periodically to reassure him, but to not pick him up. After several days involving an hour or more of crying, my husband and I gave up. It was just too painful for the three of us.

My husband and I talked it over. We decided that we would stay in the room with him until he fell asleep. We agreed to leave him in the crib and to not pick him up. We would avoid talking to or making eye contact with him.

In the beginning, one of us would lay down on the regular bed that was also located in his room. At first, he was suspicious. My son would pop his head up at frequent intervals to make sure that we were still there. We would continue to lie motionless on the bed. Finally, he would settle down and fall asleep. Even when he went to stay with his grandparents, the same ritual was carried out.

This continued for a while. Eventually, we would sit on the bed until he fell asleep. Then, we would sit in the doorway where he could see us. Finally, we were able to tell him that we would be in the next room if he needed us. We have tiptoed and even crawled out of his room many a night so we would not wake him!

Not long ago, one of the Nanny shows on television indicated that this was the best way to handle a child who did not like to go to sleep alone. My husband and I were quite proud that we had figured it out on our own.

I know this: If it worked with my son, it will work with your child!

Baby Shower Invitations The Modern Way

By David Everett

In today's internet age, there should never be a need to write out multiple invitations to a baby shower by hand, unless, of course, you want to. By carrying out a search on the internet, you will quickly discover there are numerous ways that you can avoid using those little invitations where you need to fill in the blank spaces provided for each piece of information. Instead, baby shower invitations can be a simple matter of just printing off the required number of copies. So much easier!

One option you may decide to employ is to make your own invitations at home. All you need to buy is some sheets of colored card. You can then make your desired cute or simple layout according to your taste. Once you have checked to make sure that all of the included information is correct, you can do a trial print to make sure that your design looks as good as you designed it to be. Just make sure that you fold it correctly, according to the way you want it presented, and that you have envelopes that your invitations will fit into.

Another option, if you want to make your own baby shower invitations, is to cut your colored card into postcard size pieces, then print the details on one side and use pre-printed address labels on the other side. This option makes life easier for you as your baby shower invites will not require any fancy folding or envelopes, and the cost of mailing them will also be a lot less.

This is an excellent way to obtain state-of-the-art baby shower invitations. More and more people are turning to these services as they become easier to make and cheaper to buy.

You will find that these template invitations that you order via the internet are dearer than the packages of blank invitations, but the benefits of the online invitation, both for baby showers, and for many other types, are numerous. Gone is the need to write out the invitations. Now you can get a professionally printed invitation at a very affordable price. For just a small extra fee you can add custom return-address labels that match the invitations. Most importantly, the only job that is left for you to do is address them!

Whichever method you choose, don't forget to save a baby shower invitation to give to the guest of honor!

Baby High Chairs - What Options Do You Need?

By Ned D'Agostino

When new parents are looking at all of the things they must have for their child, baby high chairs are near the top of the list. There are so many different options out there, it can be confusing wondering which features are must haves and which are simply optional. Here's what to look for in a high chair.

Safety features are obviously very important. You should look for a chair with a wide base for the greatest stability. It should have a low center of gravity to minimize the chance of tipping over. Once a baby is old enough to need one, they are strong enough to do all sorts of things to unbalance a chair, and should never be left alone while in their high chair.

Invest in a high chair that has good safety straps. A five point harness is the safest choice, but some parents find them cumbersome. The basic straps should include a crotch strap that is used in conjunction with the waist strap. This ensures that the baby does not slip through the bottom and become entangled in the straps. Don't rely on just the tray to keep your child safe.

Comfort is important, but being easily washed is also. Check the cleaning instructions for the pad and make sure it is machine washable. Trust me, you will be glad that it is the first time your precious little one dumps strained peas in their lap!

Many on the market today offer options like attachable toys to keep baby entertained. These are actually very helpful. Babies are easily bored, so having something fun for them to play with will allow everyone else at the table to enjoy their meal in peace. It can also entertain a hungry child while dinner is being prepared.

Some other nice features are a one hand tray release. This makes getting your baby in and out of their chair much easier. Another great thing to have is a high chair that reclines. This allows even very young babies to take part in family meals. Many chairs also have height adjustments so they will fit any table. Many manufacturers make trays that you can simply put in the dishwasher for easy clean up. Other chairs have a snack tray option. This means that there is a smaller tray underneath the large mealtime tray that is perfect for an afternoon snack.

What options you choose depends largely on how you plan to use them and your budget. Remember the more features you select, the more the chair will cost. If it is just for occasional meals, a basic model will be just fine. If you plan to use it daily, however, then you may want to go for more bells and whistles. The only things that you really cannot afford to scrimp on are the basic high chair safety features that we mentioned above.

Cloth Diapers - 5 Myths Debunked

By Ian Stoddart

One of the first decisions my wife and I had to make about our new son was whether to use cloth reusable diapers or the traditional disposable diapers. We heard many persuasive testimonies and arguments supporting each side. We wanted to do what was in the best interest for our son, our family, and our environment; we knew we had a tough decision on our hands. Ultimately we opted for reusable diapers, Kushies Ultra Diapers to be exact, and we couldn't be happier. These are some of the myths regarding reusable diapers that we soon found to be untrue.

1. Cloth diapers don't save you money-We had heard on several occasions that cloth diapers don't save you money in the long run. Our experience showed this to be completely untrue. Our initial purchase of 10 Kushies Ultra Newborn size and 10 Kushies Ultra Infant size has gotten him through his first year. This initial investment cost us less than $200. When I compare this to my friends who are rushing out and spending at least $30 a week, I know that we have made a smart financial decision. And the best part is our reusable diapers still have lots of use left in them for our second baby, so we will just keep on saving in years to come.

2. Cloth diapers are difficult to use- One of our biggest concerns were all the horror stories we heard about the dangerous pins and complicated folding of cloth diapers. Well let me tell you this is a thing of the past. All the quality cloth diapers now come with an adjustable Velcro waist that is as easy to use as any disposable diaper. Today's cloth diaper just as simple to use as disposable diapers.

3. Cloth diapers are not better for the environment-My wife and I had read on a couple websites that reusable diapers were not as good for the environment as we first believed. We saw claims that the amount of water and hydro needed to clean cloth diapers offset the reduction in landfill space. At our home we simply throw in the diapers with a load of laundry that we are already doing. Since our son came along we are doing a load of laundry every other day to keep up, and every time we do we just add his 7 or 8 diapers to the mix. We have only had to do "extra" loads of laundry for his diapers on a couple of occasions. When I see the huge garbage bags that my friend haul out to the curb each week, and compare it with our half bag of garbage, I know we have made the right decision for our environment

4. Cloth diapers are hard on baby's skin-Our son has been wearing Kushies Ultra diapers for one year now, and at no time has he had any type of diaper rash. I know this sounds hard to believe but cloth diapers do not have the chemicals and dyes that are present in disposable diapers. These chemicals are responsible for a high number of rashes and reactions that babies have. As well, the diapers we use 5 layers of 100% cotton flannel, keeping our son as dry as any disposable diaper would.

5. Cloth diapers leak-This was a huge concern for us. As much as we love the environment and saving money my wife and I were not interested in cloth diapers if it meant an outfit change every couple of hours. So we were so pleased to discover we had no leaking problems with our Kushies diapers. The diapers come in three sizes, so they grow with your baby. Each size has an adjustable Velcro closure so they can fit all baby shapes and sizes. The waterproof outer barrier combined with the soft leg elastics has all added up to one dry and happy baby in our house.

Make Room for Baby

By Ron Maier Jr.

Before you welcome your new bundle of joy home, you need to prepare. This can include baby proofing your house, top to bottom. But it also has its fun points too! Preparing your baby's nursery can be a lot of fun. If you are inexperienced with creating a nursery that's user-friendly, then you may need some tips. Everyone will have advice for you. We're going to discuss the things that you may not have considered about your nursery set up. Don't fret; just keep these few basic points in mind and you'll have a wonderfully welcoming, usable nursery for your new baby.

The first thing to think about is your baby's sleeping situation. You want a modern crib and not too much bedding. Check on current safety standards before you purchase either. When you get your crib and bedding home, it should be the first thing that you put into the room. Consider your placement wisely. Often the place that seems the best isn't the best at all. Better to consider why you might want the crib in a certain place now rather than finding out later that it wasn't such a good idea. Then you might end up rearranging the whole room.

The first thing to consider is sunlight. The crib needs to be where the baby isn't going to get a ray of sunlight or intense heat when the sun comes up in the morning. This is especially important if your windows don't have UVA/UVB sunlight protection. Little babies can sunburn very easily. The next consideration is noise. A squeaky door can interrupt precious sleeping time. Experiment in the room with your television on. See where the quietest place is. If the nursery is at the end of your hallway, then television noise from the living room can be amplified into the baby's room.

Many parents choose to put a single bed for a grown-up into the nursery as well. If you have good storage area, then you might want a cot in the baby's room. This way, if the baby is sick or just needs you in the room, you've got somewhere that you can relax and sleep. Just make sure that if you have a cot or other folding bed, that it is where the baby can never get to it. A chain lock up high on a closet door is a good option for keeping the closet off limits.

You can really make space in the room by utilizing an off-limits closet. You can easily install a medicine cabinet up high in the closet to keep all of the essentials close at hand. Use childrens hangers to hang special outfits up high. You might even decide to install shelving for all of your other baby clothes needs. Not having a dresser is a money saving, safe, space saving option for parents looking to maximize space.

About the Author: Ron Maier is the owner of Only Kids Hangers, a leading provider of childrens hangers. The right childrens clothes hangers really make the difference in kid's retail or home organization.

8 Things You Should Know About Dieting While Breastfeeding

By Vicky Lynum

A healthy diet for a breastfeeding mother means a healthy diet for her newborn. Here is some advice for women who breastfeed and need to look after their newborns` health:

1. Eat a lot of fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and diary food.

2. Increase your daily calorie intake by 500 calories and drink a lot of water.

3. Avoid alcohol because it may reach to your newborn through milk. However, if you really must consume alcohol, do it after breastfeeding. Try to avoid caffeine or at least reduce the amounts of caffeine in your diet. For instance, one cup of coffee per day is not very dangerous for the baby but large amounts can make your newborn more nervous or cause sleep apnea.

4. Don`t smoke while you breastfeed, or around children.

5. Babies sometimes react different when the mothers eat beans, cauliflower, or broccoli and then breastfeed them. If the newborn shows negative reactions to certain foods, try to avoid those foods.

6. Newborns may also be allergic to the milk in the mother`s diet. Symptoms may show up in a few hours in the form of diarrhea, gases, eruptions, or agitation.

7. Certain medication is not allowed for women who breastfeed. You should inform your doctor if you breastfeed before he or she prescribes any medicine to you.

8. Some contraceptives may affect the milk production, but the effects depend on each person and the type of the contraceptive. You should always look for medical advice before taking...

Developmental Milestones 12 to 18 Month of Age

By Barbara Hillary, PhD

Babies develop at all different rates but here's what to look for from 12 to 18 months of age.

At 12 months of age your baby starts to transition into toddler hood. As she becomes more active, her baby fat melts away and she begins to lose her baby features.

She understands much more than she can express and learns new words daily. That is why it is important to talk to her about everything, describe to her what you see and hear, as well as read to her daily. At this age, your toddler starts to use gestures to express what she thinks and feels. For example, she may take your hand, lead you to the kitchen, and point to the fridge and say "milk."

By about 12 months of age, children can follow a one-step command, such as "go get your toy." By 18 months, children should be able to follow more complex instructions consisting of 2 or 3 steps. At this time, children begin to engage in pretend play. They imitate their caregivers and by doing so, learn new skills. For example, you may notice your child pretending to vacuum or sweep one day.

At this time of development, your child starts to use tools, such as a spoon or toothbrush. She also begins to understand symbols and ideas. For example, while brushing her teeth, your child may pretend that the toothbrush becomes an airplane. Pretend play is a major developmental milestone. It allows your child to develop creativity and other intellectual skills.

You can enhance your child's development by doing the following activities:

- Read daily

- Encourage to use words and gestures to communicate

- Play games that provide instructions

- Provide toys that represent objects in your child's environment, such as a broom or vacuum cleaner. You probably already noticed that you toddler is active and ready to explore from the time she wakes up until bedtime (perhaps with a short break for a nap). Toddlers' motor skills advance exponentially. They walk, jump, and run in their quest to be independent. Keep in mind that they lack judgment skills, therefore they need a safe environment to pursue their discoveries.

At this age, you child should reach the following milestones:

- Learn new words daily
- Build 2-word sentences by age 2
- Understand 1-step commands by 12 months
- Understand 2- and 3-step commands by 18 months
- Use spoon
- Engage in pretend play
- Imitate caregivers
- Point to things

How to Cure Cradle Cap Near Eyelids

By Addam Devin

Cradle cap generally occurs on the head of a baby. The areas that are most prone to the disease are the top of the head, the area along with eyebrows, eyelids etc. And different affected areas have different means of treatment. When the disease occurs along the eyelids, the typical medical advice is to use diluted baby shampoo on a cotton swab to cleanse the affected area.

There is no certainty with regard to the proportion of dilution. It may range from a few drops to half cup warm water or even it may be a fifty/fifty mix. Though no specific studies have been made on the efficacy or safety of this treatment, it has been found fruitful in treating cradle cap. However, it cannot be ignored that there is problems in using shampoo in the affected area. Shampoo contains a detergent that is supposed to cause harm to the baby.

Generally, when comparing soap and baby shampoo to commercial eyelid scrubs, parents strongly preferred not to put soap or shampoo on the affected area. Baking soda has also been recommended is a means of treating cradle cap when it occurs near eyelids. A teaspoonful of soda can be added to a cup of boiled water and applied on the place. It is a popular method of treating the skin condition.

Whatever may be the method of treating cradle cap, it must be kept in mind that the disease is not an infectious one and there is no chance that it would take a bad turn and cause harm to the baby or contaminate those who come near to it. The disease may get well automatically but in between it should be managed properly. Parents should ensure that they take measures to keep the disease under control by being careful.

Cradle Cap - Easy Ways of Curing It

By Addam Devin

It is not at all necessary to be worried about cradle cap as it is simply a skin condition and in no way a harmful disease. Parents and relatives show their concern for the disease mainly because they are frightened by the look of it and secondly, they love the child so much so that they do not like to see any unwanted on spot on its body. But specialists are always in favour of taking the disease lightly.

Very often it is see that cradle cap vanishes automatically without any treatment even. Sometimes it takes only a few months for the skin condition to vanish while sometimes it may take as long as two years for the skin condition to be cured fully. In between, what is necessary for parents or caretakers is to manage the disease properly. Some very easy methods are enough to keep it well under control.

In some cases, dermatologists suggest the use of oils for keeping cradle cap under control. Any kind of oil, vegetable or chemical, can be used liberally on the affected area and then left for quite a few hours. When the oil is soaked well by the scales, they can be removed by using something very soft. In this case, parents should be extra careful as, using something hard or brushing off the oily scales carelessly, can worsen the condition and cause harm to the baby.

There are lots of other ways of treating cradle cap. Using shampoo is one of the most frequently applied methods. Parents can use mild shampoo, those that are especially manufactured for babies, on the affected area and wash it off gently. Apart from shampoo and oil, the other ways that are effective in curing cradle cap include the use of homely remedies like tea tree oil, aloe and paste made of other homely herbs.

Babies And What They Do!

By Thaddaeus Plemmons

When I get home from work I come home to my two daughters and wife. I have a 5 month year old baby girl. She is so amazing. Me and my wife realized she likes to suck on her toes. The only way she does that is if she is just wearing her diaper. She also picked up a habit from her sister, when she starts to get mad she spits out bubbles and makes funny noises, to get our attention. This all started when we went on vacation to Mexico in December.

Me and my wife also realized that she likes to look at my hands and not my wifes. Of course she prefers to suck on daddies fingers rather than mommies. It is funny how they can define different features from people and recognize them all the time. I think she has also realized that every other night me and my wife switch nights on getting up with her. The night my wife was supposed to get up with her she stayed up most the night and did not sleep. The next night it was my time, she woke up around four o'clock, I got up put her binky in her mouth and she fell back asleep until six o'clock. Next night up with mommie at three o'clock and did not go back to bed. Next night daddie slept till six thirty. That is my girl. I just thought I would share that with some people, might not be exciting for some but it is for me.

Introducing Solids - 12 Tips For Success

By Maureen H Lawrence

You have made the decision.

On this specific date I'm going to start feeding my baby on solid food.

You will make this choice because your baby has got to the age when you have been advised that is what you should do or because your baby is really hungry and needs the food. You will be faced with many alternatives and lots of differing advice. Your baby did not come with an instruction leaflet that told you exactly how and when to start her on solid food. You may find the whole thing very daunting experience especially if you are a first time parent.

I have instructed many parents as to how to start feeding solids as well as how add new foods and flavor to a child's diet and raise a child who will eat a very varied diet.

Twelve tried and tested feeding tips

1. The best time to introduce a new taste to your baby is when she is really hungry but not when she is tired and cranky. Don't give her, her favorite food first otherwise she is less likely to want to try the new taste. In the beginning you may want to add a new taste to one she already likes but you then need to introduce the new taste on its own.

2. It is easy and much better if you can cook food for your baby and not use jars too often. This can be done easily as you can cook just once a week and freeze the food. Cook the vegetables and fruit, puree them and put them into an ice cube tray and freeze them. Once frozen place them in labeled bags or containers in the freezer.

3. When you first introduce a new taste to your baby she may react in a negative manner. This is normal. Parents may think that if a baby does not like a food taste the first time then it is best not to give that food to her for a few weeks. Instead try giving it to her for three or four consecutive meals and then she will often react a little more positively at each meal as she gets used to the taste.

4. Don't avoid giving your child a food just because you don't like it. Children will often eat things that their parents don't like if they are given it.

5. You can introduce spices to you child's food from an early age (not salt). If you do this you will raise a child who eats a wide variety different food tastes all throughout her life. As she gets older include a wide variety of different foods everyday and introduce your child to a well balanced diet from early in life.

6. Sometimes a baby may not be very interested in eating off her spoon; it can help if you let her smell the food. It might be the spoon that she doesn't like so using a different one may solve the problem. Never add solid food to your baby's bottle unless instructed to do so by your paediatrician for medical reason.

7. You do not have to heat up your baby's food. If your baby gets used to eating food at room temperature it will be easier to feed her when you are away from home.

8. Let your child enjoy exploring her food with her fingers, she will make a mess but this is part of the enjoyment. This is one of life's rich positive experiences and most children will enjoy it.

9. As soon as your child can sit confidently in her chair then think about eating as least one meal together each day as a family. Children learn a lot by watching and copying people. Set a good example to her by having a well balanced diet yourself. Try to make meal times a positive experience for all of you.

10. Many parents start there baby's on flavored yogurt this is not necessary. Instead introduce her to plain yogurt and fruit puree.

Here are some suggestions of the fruit you can use:

Apple sauce with a hint of cinnamon

Pear or apple

Cooked peach with apple, pear or banana

Mashed avocado

Apple or pear flavoured with blueberries

11. Steam all your vegetables and then use the water for sauce or gravy or add to soups.

12. Don't give your child food to pacify her as this gets her to associate being calmed with food and this can become a habit for life.

Remember children learn more by what they see you doing so set an exemplary example to your child.

You have to set this type example in every area of your life as you raise your child. You sometimes could use some free advice and simple tips from an expert.

Hand Dominance - Will She Be a Lefty or Righty?

By Barbara Hillary, PhD

Hand dominance is a term that describes your child's preference to use the right or left hand to perform most tasks in her daily live. These task can range from holding a spoon, or stacking blocks, to drawing and writing. The hand that is dominant is not necessarily stronger than the other one. Your child just prefers to use it to do most things.

Consistent hand dominance starts to develop somewhere between two and three years of age. This development is usually fully completed by age 6 years. As the brain matures and its functions begin to differentiate, you will notice that hand dominance begins to emerge in your child. Hand preference that appears before the age of 18 months may signal impaired neurological control of the other hand and a health care provider should be consulted. Since hand preference is determined by your child's brain development, "forcing" your child to use the non-dominant hand more often may me futile.

Hand dominance is determined largely by genetics. Studies show that only 2% of children of right-handed parents are left-handed. On the other hand, 42% of children with left-handed parents are left-handed.

In the history of many nations, being left handed was associated with social stigma. In many languages, including English, the word "right" also means "correct" or "proper." On the other hand, the Latin word "sinistra," from which the English word sinister was derived, meant "left," "malicious," or "sinister." Being a righty or a lefty has nothing to do with being a good person. However, being ambidextrous may come in handy from time to time!

Baby Eczema - What to Look For And How To Prevent Infant Eczema

By Claire Bowes

Dermatitis means any inflammation of the skin, and if that sounds like a broad category, well, it is. Inflammation can range from a mild discomfort to the really miserable bubbles that make you wonder whether you are about to boil over. And the causes are just as various, ranging from your own genetic makeup to food, air, sun, artificial products, natural substances, and just about everything else.

When dermatitis develops to the stage where you can see cracking, and oozing, it is generally diagnosed as some kind of eczema. But no matter what you call it, itchy, inflamed skin is something that everyone would like to avoid.

Infant Eczema

Some people start getting skin outbreaks in childhood, with flare-ups that may continue off and on throughout their lives. Called atopic eczema, this rash is probably inherited from the kid's parents, or other forebears who passed along the genes. The outbreaks can occur anywhere on the body, but the most common points of affliction are joint areas like the inside of the elbows or backs of the knees.

Infantile eczema, other term for atopic eczema, thrives more in children. The victims of this kind of skin disease usually have dry skin. Because of it, children are relatively more sensitive to irritation. Along with it, other atopic diseases branch out such as allergies, hay fever, and asthma.

The Causes

After some careful researches and studies, nobody can still identify the real cause of eczema in babies. Researchers can only associate the fact that most of the babies that suffer from infantile eczema have parents or relatives that have hay fever, allergies, or asthma.

The Symptoms

Usually, eczemas in babies appear at the second month and may last until the baby reaches 5 years old.

Upon diagnosis, health experts may identify the first signs of the disease. But for parents who cannot distinguish eczema from mere rashes, here is a list of possible symptoms that would indicate dermatitis resulting to eczema.

1. Prickly red inflammation on the cheeks.

Usually, babies who suffer from eczema have red rashes that run from their faces down to their neck. This itchiness may also appear on their legs as well as the arms.

2. Dry skin

The rashes are generally dry by nature. But since babies gets irritated fast that they tend to scratch the surface thereby making the skin susceptible to infections. Once infected, the rash will never be dry but may generate pus.

Once this condition is present, it is important that you bring your baby to the doctor immediately. The presence of pus is an alarming condition that seeks medical attention immediately.

3. Rashes behind the wrists, neck, arms, and ankles

As the baby grows old, the rashes will still continue to reappear after sometime. By the time the baby reaches the age of 1 and ½ up to 2 years old, the pattern of the symptoms is more identifiable.

Prevention

Prevention in eczema is the key to an itch-free development among babies. Hence, if a patch of eczema starts, the baby will invariably scratch, and the scratching damages the skin and makes the eczema worse, which causes more scratching. Once eczema is out of control like this, getting it under control is far more difficult especially if you are dealing with the babies.

Just keep in mind that even if the main cause of the disease is still identifiable, there are approximately 65,000 different substances that might cause contact irritant dermatitis in your baby.

Hence, it would be better to always use baby-friendly products so as to prevent possible irritation that may eventually lead to eczema.

As they say, prevention is better than cure, so, it is better to start avoiding things that might irritate your baby's skin.

Wooden High Chairs - The Best Choice For Your Baby?

By Ned D'Agostino

Sure you want your high chair to be functional, but you want it to be beautiful as well. Wooden high chairs can be both. While plastic and metal chairs were the norm for a long time, more and more parents are choosing wood chairs again, not only because they do the job they are intended for, but because they look great with the rest of the furniture.

If you've ever had one of those metal chairs, chances are you went to the trouble of hiding it or putting it away when company was coming over. It looked like it didn't belong. They can be large and ungainly, and they don't seem to fit neatly anywhere, even if they do fold up for "easy storage."

Those made of wood, however, do fit in. With lots of finishes and styles to choose from, parents can find one that fits the décor of their home. If the dining table and kitchen cabinets are oak, a nice oak high chair looks like it was made to fit right in. Other options you may find include maple, cherry and natural wood. You will find models that look like antiques and some that look very modern. A wooden chair is durable, and can be passed down for generations as a family heirloom if it is well made.

With any of them, you want function as well as beauty. When you are looking at them, make sure that the tray is easy to lock and unlock. Can you do it with one hand? Is it important for your chair to have a plastic tray that goes in the dishwasher, or is it okay to have a wooden tray to wipe down after every meal?

Safety is another concern. No matter how beautiful a high chair is, will your child be safe there? Does the chair come with secure restraints to keep baby from sliding out? Is the chair sturdy enough for an older baby that wiggles vigorously? Does it have good balance?

Wood chairs can be all of those things, but there are drawbacks. They may not be as functional as the traditional plastic and metal variety. They don't come with wheels, and they don't have reclining seat backs. It may be more difficult to find a wood chair that adjusts for height, as well. Wooden chairs won't come with built-in toys on the feeding tray. That feature is limited to the plastic chairs. If these features are important to you, it may be better to look at high chairs made of plastic. You may have to decide between beauty and features, so you'll need to decide if those features are worth giving up something appearance.

When you are ready to make your final choice, make sure you have done your homework. It is easy to do research on several models online. It may help if you prioritize what features you can't live without, and which ones are negotiable. Remember to look at safety, function and beauty. Take your list of features you want with you when you shop, whether it is at the local baby mart or online, so you don't forget anything important.

If you decide that this is still in your future, that's great! Now you'll know exactly what features you want in your high chair, and shopping for one should be a lot easier.

The Easy Way to Feed Your Baby Without Resorting to Gerber

By Josh Day

Hey there, health-conscious parents. Have you tried making your own baby food, complete with fresh produce pureed in the food processor, then mixed with water to freeze in ice cube trays? If you're as busy as we are, you probably learned fast this was not the way to go!

We began feeding our son solids at four months. At three months he began to show a keen interest in what was going into our mouths. At four he was all but trying to snatch the food out of our hands. We knew it was time to introduce solids.

We tried making our own and quickly gave up on that. Too much time, too much mess, too many dishes. No thanks!

Ultimately, we turned to Beech Nut baby foods. But baby food is expensive and mass produced.

We decided we'd buy fresher -- and cheaper -- ingredients.

Here are some of the things we feed our baby:

1. King Oscar sardines in olive oil. Despite many people's initial yuck reaction, sardines are extremely good for you and contain more calcium than milk. You'd be surprised what your baby eats and enjoys, especially when you mash it and mix it with another favorite food. Sardines are small fish, so there is no worry for mercury contamination.

2. Goat milk. Unfortunately, we don't have access to raw goat milk, which has the most nutrients, so we have to settle for pasteurized. We buy goat milk at our local grocery store.

3. Canned vegetables like green beans, peas, carrots, and beets. We open a can, mash a small amount up with a fork, and often mix it with a meat.

We mix canned peaches, pears, and applesauce with rice cereal for breakfast.

No matter what canned items you choose, be sure to buy products with the least amount of additives -- no sugar, as little sodium as possible, with the fewest amounts of preservatives. You also want to avoid "heavy syrup" which is found in many canned fruit items.

How To Lay Your Infant Down To Sleep

By Les Scammell

Babies will often develop their own methods to calm and sooth themselves to sleep. They will often suck a thumb and/or cuddle a teddy. Some of course use a pacifier (dummy). Somehow babies link those actions with security and going to sleep. Unfortunately it is extremely difficult to teach your child to do this.

You can however provide the right situation that will encourage self calming and self settling. What we have found to work really well is to lay baby down when we think she is ready for sleep, tuck a soft teddy into the crook of her arm and follow up with a soft blanket just under her chin. Now, she automatically sticks her thumb in her mouth, grabs the teddy and blanket, half rolls onto her side and bingo - she nods off.

After four children we have finally got it right. By 8:30 each night all four are in bed and asleep and most nights we don't hear anything from them until early morning.

So what did we do that was different this time. I must confess, nothing was planned. It all happened by accident and like all cases of hindsight, we thought of course, why didn't we do that earlier? Here is a summary of what we have found to work.

Start off by getting them to go to sleep in your arms with the teddy and/or blanket. Get them to associate sleep with that softness. You will know when they have developed that association because as soon as you cradle them into your arms with the soft object, they will immediately snuggle into it and start to close their eyes and get that relaxed sleepy state. Once you have that routine, it is time to go to the next stage.

Now that baby has associated the softness with sleep you need to get into the habit of laying them down before they go to sleep. Cradle them with the blanket or teddy and as soon as they get that I am ready for sleep look - lay them down, before they go to sleep. In the beginning you may have to pick them up again, but they will quickly learn to associate the soft teddy or blanket and bed with sleep.

You don't have to use the same soft teddy every time she goes to sleep either - nor the same blanket. What is important is that the toy and blanket are soft, very soft. They then build an association with softness and sleep.

If you have a new born - try it out early - persevere, don't give up to soon. Of course, the real trick is to pick that 'right' time to lay them down, too early and they don't want to go to sleep, to late and they are over tired.

They may not go to sleep at first. You may have to pick them up again. But by persevering you will find that you will win and that sleep will come quickly and naturally for them - and for you.

The Secrets of the Co-Sleeper

By Tina Rychlik

Japanese babies sleep between their parents. Their position symbolizes a river between two banks. This picturesque view of co-sleeping reveals the intimacy between parents and their offspring and how co-sleeping creates a family unit. In contrast, modern Western societies emphasize the need for independence and individuality. As such, we are used to putting the baby to sleep in his own bed, in his own room. Even if we are told by the health visitors that it is much better to keep a baby nearby, in your own room in a separate bed, we are eager to find "excuses" such as "He is so noisy at night", "I have no privacy" etc. in order to place him back into his own cot bed in a different room.

Sleeping in a single bed, away from the parents and/or siblings is a modern phenomenon, no older than 200 years. For thousands of years prior we co-sleept with our parents, our siblings and family. The modern ways of living are ruled by individuality and independence which in turn create a society of increased anti social behavior and loneliness loneliness.

Anthropologist James McKenna conducted research in order to find out the truth about co-sleepers. He found that when a baby sleeps with his mother the pattern of brain wave activity, heart rate, muscle movement and breathing are astonishingly similar in both. During the sleep mother and baby exhibit a deep bond. Their experience of sleep is mutual as they share the same sleep pattern. In fact, it has been suggested that sleeping close to the mother helps the baby "learn" how to sleep safely explaining why the sleep pattern of both are so in sync.

Unfortunately, today's perception of sleeping with the parents is understood to create an emotional dependence which is regarded as a negative trait within the human development.

Another reason why people widely assume co-sleeping to be a threat rather than a blessing to baby development is the fear of the Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS). This phenomenon is a very controversial subject. However, recent changes in the way babies should be handled have made a big difference to the number of cot deaths: For many years, parents were told that they should lay their babies facing down so that the infant would not choke on its own vomit. However, since parents were advised to put their babies face up rather than face down the rates of SIDS dropped rapidly. Since the new advice was given, in the UK alone there has been a 90% reduction in the rate of SIDS from 1981 to 1992.*

In combination with co-sleeping, research has shown that mothers instinctively put their babies on their backs as this position makes it easier for them to breastfeed during the night, to check the baby and to give the baby freedom to move about, thus less likely to be forced into an uncomfortable position. When co-sleeping, mothers instinctively put their babies into a position that allows them to be face to face during the night. This seems to be the most natural position for both: if they lie on their back and have a choice of where to look, they move their heads to face each other. One might consider that facing each other is a danger as the mother breathes out an enormous amount of carbon dioxide. Yet, research suggests that an atmosphere of CO2 in the face might also help infants to learn to breathe because their brain is triggered to regulate breathing. Furthermore, it has been shown that direct skin-to-skin contact, especially for premature babies, is very important as long as they do not get overheated.

Mothers are very instinctive when they co-sleep with their new babies and repeatedly kiss, touch and readjust the baby, often even when asleep. In contrast to sleeping in their own rooms, co-sleeping babies are under constant supervision.

The individual experience of co-sleeping with a baby is very intense. As parents we take on huge responsibility to raise our babies and children safely. We have to keep in mind that babies and parents grow together. As their needs change so do the responses that constitute a dynamic two-way system that requires each other. The parent-baby relationship is shaped through an interactive system which meets the infant's biological necessities. As such, co-sleeping is a vital part of this relationship and helps to meet both parents' and babies' needs to bond naturally.

Safety Tips for Baby Furniture

By JB Anthony

Various baby furniture have various sets of safety precautions. However, there are a couple of common baby safety tips you should keep in mind in all furniture.

Placement of Furniture

Believe it or not, the spot where you place your baby furniture can help prevent accidents and injuries to your baby. Cribs for example should never be placed beside a low window or beside a heavy piece of furniture. A baby that is already on the standing phase might fall off from a window or might get crushed under a piece of furniture that might accidentally topple. Another example would be high chairs which should not be placed beside walls or counters since a baby could use these to kick off from and topple a high chair.

Furniture Knobs and Latches

A good baby furniture must be child-proof. Simple leg latches and strap locks of high chairs for example may be operated by a toddler or an older baby which may cause the straps to loosen or the high chair to collapse. Cribs too with side knobs may be tinkered with by a curious baby and cause a crib to collapse.

Age of Baby

A baby's age and weight also matters in choosing the best furniture for your nursery. Most baby furniture pieces contain age and weight requirements. If you are unsure then simply use your common sense. Some changing tables and strollers will not be able to hold the weight of babies nearing the toddler stage.

When your baby begins to stand up, it is advisable to use baby brackets. Brackets installed behind a piece of furniture and attached to the wall can help support furniture that could topple over a curious baby who attempts to scale cabinets and drawers.

Labels

Always check the labels of all baby furniture pieces. Although furniture sold in stores are supposed to be compliant with government safety standards, you should always make sure that your baby's furniture carriers the right label that says so. Warning labels are also another thing to look at. Warning labels will tell you how exactly should pieces of furniture be used and what you should not do with it.

Recalls

Every now and then, check for model recalls. Although most baby furniture in the market are believed to be safe at the time that they are released to consumers, some product flaws are only discovered weeks or months after the release. Always have an ear and eye out for product recalls that may include your furniture model.

Specific Use

All pieces of toddler furniture have been carefully designed with babies' safety in mind. You should always remember though that even the safest piece of furniture is intended for use with adult supervision. Never get tempted to let a piece of furniture baby sit your baby for you. Always keep an eye on your baby whether he is on a crib, playpen, high chair or just crawling on the rug on his own.

What New Parents Should Know About Baby Diapers

By Jacob Sakol

When your first child arrives, it's easy to feel overwhelmed by the decisions you'll need to make. I know from experience. You need to decide on the best baby formula, how best to manage your baby's sleep patterns, when and if you should nurse your child and dozens of things. You also need to decide on which diapers to use on your newborn. Though the choice seems simple enough at first ("Huggies or Pampers"), there's more to infant diapers than meets the eye. I'm going to provide you with some pros and cons of using disposable baby diapers over cloth, advice about which name brands to consider and some specific diapers that other parents recommend.

Disposable Vs. Cloth Baby Diapers

Both types of baby diapers have their proponents and detractors. While some people say that cloth ones are better for the environment and cost less, others suggest that disposable ones are better at keeping your baby dry and far more convenient for parents. In short, both sides are accurate. Both disposable and cloth baby diapers offer benefits unmatched by the other type. The best way for you to decide which type of infant diapers you should use with your child is to learn the benefits and drawbacks to each.

Huggies, Pampers Or Luvs Baby Diapers?

While it's true that newborn diapers aren't necessarily high-quality merely because they're produced by a well-known brand, the major brands are well-regarded by experienced parents. Huggies, Pampers and Luvs have built their businesses by creating diapers that provide comfort for your child, prevent leakages while keeping their skin dry and allowing maximum movement. Each brand produces several types of diapers. Some are more comfortable than others. All 3 brands have reasons to recommend them as well as downsides. Pampers and Huggies are the highest-priced of the major brands with Luvs considered as an economical alternative for parents on a tight budget.

Top-Rated Baby Diapers To Consider

Pampers Cruisers are especially well-regarded by both parents to whom I've spoken and Consumer Reports. They're higher-priced than other brands (and even other types of baby diapers within Pampers' line) for good reasons. They have excellent leakage prevention and a great design that will allow your child to move around comfortably when they start crawling and walking.

Huggies Baby-Shaped Diapers are also a great choice for new parents. They're designed to fit comfortably while providing excellent dryness for your baby. Some fasteners on newborn diapers are cumbersome to work with. But, the Baby-Shaped ones come with fasteners that are easy to use and offer a snug fit.

If you prefer to travel the cloth route, you may want to consider Kissaluvs Fitted infant diapers. These diapers come with convenient snaps that come in handy when you're trying to find the right fit for your baby. If you are using cloth diapers for a newborn, Kissaluvs come with top snaps that cover and protect your child's umbilical cord area.

Choosing The Right Baby Diapers

Because there are so many things to consider when selecting diapers for your baby, it's nearly impossible to make a definitive recommendation. Your choice depends on how much value you place on leakage protection, ability to keep skin dry, cost, mobility and other factors. Learn as much as you can about what the top-rated diaper brands and styles can offer before making your selection. With a little research and the information above, you'll find the right one for your child.

What to Expect for Baby's First Bath Time

By Don Pinder

Having a baby is a time when you begin to look after another human. Babies are fragile and tiny, with little faces, hands and feet that need your loving care and affection. Bath time is a special part of looking after your baby that allows you to bond. It can also be a challenge for a first time mom or dad, and even a second time parent. The intricacies of washing your little one with soap and water may not sound too difficult, but babies do not just lie there like still dolls.

They are floppy when very young, may wriggle or scream the house down. The best advice to give a nervous mom is to detach yourself from the situation. Now, it may sound cruel, but by blocking out the babies screaming so that it won't affect you emotionally, you are able to get on with the job at hand much more effectively and make the process quicker and less traumatic for your baby. Remember though, that crying is healthy for the baby and it does not make you a bad parent if they do - babies cannot be silent all the time; they need to exercise their lungs.

Here are some things to remember when it is bath time to make the entire experience as easy as possible. Make sure that you have everything you need at hand. It is recommended for the first few months of a baby's life to use a small plastic bath tub. You can place it inside your normal bath or it can be set on a changing table or compactum.

Keep soaps, cloths and shampoo right next to you, so that you do not have to look away from your baby. Keeping eye contact is very important and it lets them know that they are safe. Babies have spent most of their lives in water up to the point when they are born, so bathing should calm and relax them.

If they are not calm and relaxed, it can mean that there is something else wrong. In order to make bath time and relaxing time, put on some soothing music and close the windows so that there is no draft on the baby's cold body, even if you are hot. A baby cannot regulate its body temperature that well, so any changes in temperature for them will be huge.

Check that the water is not too hot or too cold. You can find testers and bath thermometers to help you check the water, otherwise feel it with your elbow.

You can also find plenty of books that will guide you further about bathing your baby for the first time.

Cradle Cap, Not Need To Fuss Over It

By Addam Devin

Cradle cap is a neonatal disease found among the babies of around two to three months old. It is marked by yellowish, patchy, crusty, greasy and scaly marks on the skin. Generally it occurs on the head of the baby. The usual place in the head where it occurs is the surrounding of the ears, the eyebrows or the eyelids. It may also occur in other parts of the body, though very rarely.

The cause of cradle cap is not clearly defined by dermatologists. Some of them opine that it occurs due to the overactive sebaceous glands in the skin of the baby. The hormones of the mother still active in the body of the baby are held responsible for the presence of the glands. The glands release a kind of greasy substance that makes old skin cells attach to the scalp as they try to dry and fall off.

On the other hand, some specialists opine that cradle cap has something to do with the skin yeasts that are also known as Mallasezia furfur. Nutritionally oriented practitioners believe that it is caused by the baby's immature digestive system. They explain that the baby cannot absorb sufficient biotin and other vitamins of the B-complex. Hence, the disease occurs. However, the cause of the skin condition does not hinder its cure. Rather, the disease is easily curable, even without any serious treatment.

Experts suggest parents not to fuss over cradle cap as it can be cured without rigorous medical treatment. They only advise to be careful about the fact that the disease does not spread in other parts of the body. It is not caused by infection and there is no chance that it would get infectious. Yet, care should be taken to keep it under control. Keeping the affected area moist should also be the aim of the parents.

Addam has extensive knowledge on dermatology, especially on cradle cap. His articles are informative and beneficent for those who are concerned with treatment of skin disease.
